A good program for DVD Ripping and file conversions?

I like to make music videos from anime shows, and I hate torrenting and downloading since I don't always have the files I want or the types of files i want, and since Sony Vegas, Adobe, or any other high-end video editing programs are expensive, I want to platy it legal (I use windows movie maker, as horrible of a program as it may be, it gets the job done)

What is the best freeware ripper i can get? (currently using VLC but it's a tiring process)
What is the best freeware file converter program i can get? (currently using Prism)
