A hidden Patch Tuesday gem: A Windows 7 hotfix rollup

LOL... It's primarily for IT managers but it can be run by anyone on a single machine. It's pretty simple--Just download it, install it then run as administrator. The report can be viewed or printed. If viewed, there's links on the report that show you how to correct any of the problems.

This is just part of the report when viewed. The one "missing" roll-up is for IE-9 which I don't use. I had it loaded for a while to try it out but went back to IE-8.

Here's one reason why counts don't mean anything when just comparing counts. Machines differ too widely with installed applications. If you go just by counts, I'd say you guys are missing about 100 or so. :p

Can anyone give me a vague idea about how long a normal scan with MBSA should take? My PC is 1yr old & other info is in 'My System Specs. I already XL'd the scan once after not seeing anything in 40 mins.

Thanx.

never mind, just now finished from my re-start at 3:47.

Ops! Yeah, I forgot to warn folks about that. It has to analyze your machine then check the updates with Microsoft's catalogs so it will take a while. You can still do other things while it's running. I wasn't sure how long it took on my machine. After waiting about ten minutes, I went on to other things then came back and it was finished. For sure, you have more patients than me. :)

Yup, after a few mins, of 2nd try I just minimized it & came back to forum to snoop around & check on my other posts & had just finished the one above when I noticed the color change of MBSA in the tray, hence my edit. :)
Now if only I could get a scrolling screen capture of results so I could start a new thread & be a pest full of questions. :D

There's an option along the bottom to copy the report to the clipboard. You don't have to re-run the analysis as the old reports are saved. Just start it and click on View existing security scan reports select the report. Copy it to the clipboard then paste it in a thread. Use the wrap text with "Code Tags" and it will become scrollable text in your message. Highlight the text you want then click on the # sign in the tools area of the message box.

I didn't really look at mine that closely so you might want to review it for non-public info first. Just copy to NotePad to review/edit then select and copy again before pasting to your message.

Afaik, you can just leave them. They take a bit of disk space.

I am doing this so I can get a more accurate list of updates to put in my DIY 7sp2.

I have made one already which works very well.

I looked at it again, added a few new updates and took out some superseded.

Done it now. Great.

That is why Danny's info about the number of updates was of interest. I might have asked him for a list for comparison. He installed recently and only has 111.Therefore he probably doesn't have a whole bunch of Office or other optionals. I could have looked at that, checked the kb info and perhaps picked up anything that was missing from mine. I don't think I need to now.

Just tested by installing from my diy sp2 image. Spot on. I used lists from Steve, komm and burf to help.
Might need to adjust Steves uls to incorporate what I did.

Interesting, unless you have a lot of optionals, there are a few dozen superseded hanging around on some systems.

I just uninstalled about 25 superseded. WU has not offered tham again. I don't use defender or msrt , so it isn't those.

How do you find superseded updates that can be uninstalled?
Is it better to uninstall them, or just leave them installed "as-is" ... for reliability, performance, etc.?

I got everything green besides two and about the updates I already knew about it since I have it like that on purpose because sometimes when i'm online gaming it will start downloading updates and make lag. The 2nd I have no idea what's for, I don't think I need it by reading what it is sounds something more for like a public pc idk. Uh the firewall I just use my comodo firewall so yea.

I remember once I wanted to underline something I was posting & when I clicked on U, I got symbols that had me lost so all I know is to just type, do smileys, & attach files. Also think that if I want to ask more questions about MBSA I should move to a different area of the board 'cuz most of the replies like the last 3 are about the 'Hidden Gem' which is waaay over my head & just causing me more confusion. I shouldn't have jumped in here with my question in the 1st place, my bad. :(

For a total roll up of post SP1 fixes 31 MB seems on the small side???
I doubt that I would have stumbled across it I'm just leaving it sit for the time being. Does it really need to be run?

It's not a security rollup! There may be improvements in efficiency. I installed it 36 hours ago on a single un-networked PC. No difference noticed in regular internet usage.

A couple of speed increases noticed in access to:1) fonts in control panel; also fixed(?) something faulty in remembering settings there, 2) external hard drives; sleeping hard drives still take awhile.

From what I've read, most of the items in the rollup are geared towards networks in enterprises. I can't tell from update history whether those items were disregarded for my PC, since they wouldn't apply.

I did install and run MBSA. It could use some work on the user-interface and visual feedback. It found four security updates I "missed": 3 visual c++ redistributables that were never offered and a time-zone one that didn't seem to apply for me at the time of its release.

Just to let a little feedback about this Enterprise Roll-up package...

I 've noticed a slower boot about 2 seconds that might comes from the SMB network drivers.
Nothing in particular in the Events Manager can tell errors after applying this package.

It is a smooth install at least.:)

There's a list of drivers and .dll it had install on screenshots. Mostly all are dated from October 2012

Britton, Thanks but not sure I understand what you're saying but as I said earlier, this thread was originally about Patch Tuesday so I really need to get out of here so people can get on with that subject. I fear I've just caused a mess of confusion here by jumping in with my question about MBSA. :(

After installing this update, for the first time ever I had issues come up with sfc. I don't know if it was this or possibly something else. I restores to a backup prior to this hotfix roll-up and everything is fine. Also I didn't see any tangible benefit.

Trying to find out if it is the hotfixes. Anybody else experience this?

Hello GeneO,

I just ran an sfc /scannow on a Win 7 32 Bit OS with this update installed and did not find any problems.
Any chance you could post a screen shot, or post the problems you found ?
I'd like to know if there are issues before installing this on other systems!

Hello GeneO,

I just ran an sfc /scannow on a Win 7 32 Bit OS with this update installed and did not find any problems.
Any chance you could post a screen shot, or post the problems you found ?
I'd like to know if there are issues before installing this on other systems!

Thanks, David

Like I said, I restored from backup and the issue was gone - so can't get a screen shot. It was probably something else then - I may try to install again. Thanks.
