A Little Upgrade to Win 7

Well, my buddy came to me today asking for me to reinstall XP on his aged system, I thought 'F**k it'! lol, he's getting Win7 because I couldn't be bothered looking for drivers etc.

I shoved 7068 build on and it picked up the lot, apart from the sound drivers, which I rectified by doing a windows update, and it picked them up OK

I swear his system is ten times faster now, it just runs great

Components were:

An Gigabyte K8 board (nForce 4 chipset)
Athlon64 (socket 939) 3700 CPU
Nvidia 6600GT GPU
1Gb RAM (yes, only 1Gb of RAM)

Gotta praise MS for that one!

Just thought u guys should know if your pondering whether to switch and be able to run on lesser hardware, brilliant stuff!!!

Yep. I tossed XP SP3 on my buddies machine for him and I was surprised at how many problems he was having. I had no idea XP was such a sh-t storm. Anyway, I threw Win7 32-bit 7068 on his machine and it's been working solid/fast. Took less than half the time to install too.

After 6 months of use, XP will feel slower than a OOB Vista install. It is the nature of XP.

However, W7 has been shown to be faster in many tests versus XP, so you're actually probably right. XP hits its theoretical limit more than couple of years ago, but it's nice that a newer OS is faster than the older OS with a lot less code.

XP and newer hardware is now too much of a PITA to even bother with. The OS was not built to handle the hardware, and frankly, the hardware designers DGAF about releasing drivers to support XP anymore, so why even bother?

You did the right thing. Well, at least until it expires on him

Exactly...XP had it's day and that day is pretty much over. Gotta remember the thing is nearing 10 years old now an any OS that old is going to be ignored by hardware makers.
Vista and now W7 is actually doing a very decent job of handling allot of legacy stuff, and others just won't work no matter what, most likely due to how that hardware accesses kernel mode.

Hey Johgalt, if you can get the laptop to boot from a USB device, you use a flash drive.

I have Win7 running an old HP Pavilion 7955. A Pentium 4 1.5 ghz with 1.5 gigs of RAM, a 40 gig and 140 gig internal drive, a 750 gig and 1 TB external. It runs Shareaza and I remote into it to use it. It also houses my file serving and print serving funtionality. Win7 runs better on it than WinXP ever did. Win7 == the cool.

I've also been using Win7 at work on various machines for testing. It works flawlessly on all of them. Once the RC actually hits, I'm going to upgrade a few select users to test it out even further.

I have to keep my "XP home" around for infected users ... I would love to get rid of the OS, but I do need to refer to all the stuff that it has in order to help the infectee's.

When will the pebacks learn not to download everything they come aross?

True - since it was released in 2001, and tested for 2+ years, that means it was already in development 10 years ago now....

I know that I can - but that takes a lot of time to get those files onto a USB, and it requires me to have a free flash drive to do this - one of my pair of 4GB is being used for ReadyBoost and the other is being used for my homework and such as it goes with me - so I don't have access to a UFD big enough to do this right now even if I wanted to.

Actually, if you build PE disks then you're golden - and if you build one out of Vista or Win7, you can still access and fix XP (and even older Windows-based) machines....

Unless you need to keep it around for *installation* purposes....I can understand that, I have a WinBeta 8 in 1 XP install disc that I can use to install XP Home, Pro, MCE and Table-PC editions - all OEM and Retail, so if they have their own key already on the machine I can simply reuse it on their same machine again, and get them back into their OS, or if they do not have a key I can install the retail and with my key and then let them go online and buy a new key.
