A mistake??

Have built a desktop with an i5 2500 on a Gigabyte GA-H67A-UD3H-B3 mobo and thinking I'd up the rent (and experiment) for a little better graphics bought a Gigabyte HD 5450 and find the manual shows it only using an HDMI cable to a TV whereas I was expecting to use it for the monitor.

Now don't know much about graphics and can someone tell me if I dropped a clanger here. If I have it's not terribly expensive but annoying (kicks oneself).

Are you having problems when you connect your monitor to the HDMI port on your Graphics Card? eg No display? or are you just wondering if it is ok to use HDMI with your monitor in general.

No mate I haven't installed it yet I am just running the onboard graphics through a HDMI cable (mobo out socket to monitor HDMI in socket) and it fine just thought the card would give me a little better colour etc.

The card (I'm sure you will know) has thre outputs D-Sub HDMI and DVI.

Now the card manual shows a diagram with the HDMI running only to a TV, a D-sub running to an analogue /CRT monitor (didn't think they were still in use) and the DVI running to a digital LCD monitor but maybe that is only for demo purposes?

I would ask Gigabyte but they are super slow in replying to anything.

So I guess I'll just have to put the card in and try eh?

Basically yes! Like you said, that diagram is most likely for a demo purposes, it should output to HDMI with no problems. Just install the card following the manual provided and you should be right. Let me know how you go

FWIW - I just bought a DELL pc with the 1GB 5450 you mention installed. I already have a 23" monitor which has a HDMI socket as does the computer, so I attached a HDMI cable.Your post seems to be concerned as to whether you can attach to a monitor because the manual shows it attached to a TV, if I read you right. I can testify that the marriage to my monitor is great.

Wont be a problem at all, that monitor even thinks it's a TV so go for it. You should test with any games or video you do because the on-board graphics on these Sandy Bridge chips is actually pretty darn good.

One of the big advantages of the new Z67 boards is that you will be able to use the on-board and a dedicated card at the same time. Not possible with the H67 though.

Theres no difference between a DVI video connection, and HDMI video connection.
In terms of Video quality, they are the same.

The only difference is HDMI carries audio as well.

So, if theres no particular need for the Video and Audio to be carried by the same cable, DVI will look identical to HDMI on your PC monitor.



This is why it most likely shows it as connected to a TV, as thats the most common use.
