A "non-existent" Windows update ("KB3024777") even Google can't find

I'm not sure what this is in Windows Update [and this seems to be greyed out itself too], but how is it possible to have no results in Google on this KB that's in Windows Update?

I also clicked on the "more information" for the Microsoft Knowledge Base, but nothing came up there either.

Correct the KB3024777 Issue

I got Error Code 1 twice after attempting to install this update. I could not hide the update, so I uninstalled the update KB3024777 was supposed to uninstall. Control Panel>Programs and Features>View installed updates>manually uninstall update KB3004394 from the list. A restart is required. The update KB3024777 will no longer appear.

MS does NOT recommend uninstalling KB3004394 as it may apparently lead to other issues.

Microsoft Does Not Recommend

Yeah, yeah. Microsoft needs to do more quality testing on its updates (what is that now? three for three, eh?) before it lectures on what it does and doesn't recommend. The update that was supposed to remove the faulty update (!) doesn't work. Now that's what I call quality. Manually removing an update that Microsoft flunkies have botched is in order.

I'm not sure where Noel is getting his info, but when I read the KB it has the below - Microsoft is specifically telling people to manually uninstall to address the issues. If you don't manually uninstall, taking the new KB 302777 will then uninstall it for you

Issue for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

We have found that this update is causing additional problem on computers that are running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. This includes the inability to install future updates.

The KB 3004394 update does not cause any known problems on the other systems for which it is released. We recommend that you install the update on the other systems.

An update is available to remove KB 3004394 from Windows 7 SP1-based and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1-based computers. For more information, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

3024777(Install KB3024777 to fix an issue with KB3004394 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 )
You cannot install Windows updates after KB 3004394 is installed on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2
More information about the issue for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

If you have not yet deployed KB 3004394 on Windows 7 SP1-based and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1-based computers, we recommend that you delay installation until a new version of this update becomes available.

If you have already installed KB 3004394 on Windows 7 SP1-based and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1-based computers that were not restarted after the update was installed, we recommend that you delay the restart if it is possible until more information is added to this article about a method to remove the update.

If the installation of KB 3004394 is causing problems on these computers, remove the update, and then restart the computers. The ability to remove Windows Updates through Control Panel may no longer function on some Windows 7 SP1-based and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1-based computers after KB 3004394 is installed.

That 'flash was written before MS released KB3024777 - and as I've said elsewhere, since its release, I've taken it to mean that the uninstall could cause problems with the Control Panel, rather than that the update itself could.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3024777

...and my memory of the precise wording of the last sentence is a little different to what is currently up there, so it may have changed since I read it - although it's still only on v2.0

Anyhow, the 3024777 is effectively an uninstaller that removes all trace of the botched update.

Everyone read very carefully:
KB3024777 D-O-E-S N-O-T W-O-R-K.

All I receive is an error.

If I read one more post to use this update I WILL SCREAM.:banghead:

I thought MS told us not to manually uninstall KB3004394?

It's suggested as a possibility - and is effectively what 777 does.

Hmm - I'm not sure about that code either.

Please post the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file to a new thread , and follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

If both KB3004393 and KB3024777 are in your Installed Updates list, try this...

What AV are you using?
Please disable real-time scanning/protection and reboot

If the notification has disappeared, re-enable real-time scanning and reboot again

If the notification is still present, first check whether the real-time scanning is still switched off If so, then re-enable it and post the result. If it's turned itself back on then tell me or try again using a different disable option.

Post back with the results

Before the patch 3024777 came out I removed it to install other updates and re-installed the 3004394. But now, if I uninstall the 3004394 manually or automatically my sound card fails after the reboot. The driver re-installs properly, but when playing music or sounds I get sound card errors..

First of all: Well done Microsoft.

Secondly, shall I just wait with uninstalls until a better fix comes out? Or let it uninstall and find out what gets damaged after the uninstall..? Your opinions are welcome.

There is no 'better' fix than uninstalling the patch (which is what KB3024777 does) - and then dealing with any residual problems. :(

Error trying to install Windows up KB3024777

Like other people here I am having the problem installing the Windows update KB3024777 on my wifes computer which is Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. But on mine which is Windows 7 Professional 64 bit it said it installed fine. The only difference between the two are Home premium and Professional. I do not understand why on one and not on the other.
