Hi everyone,

I recently did a fresh install with windows 7, and have encountered a problem with screen resolution. Before, the resolution was 1024 x 786 but was very clear.

However, upon reinstalling the resolution is set to 1024 x 786 but is blurry.I'm using a compaq presario v5000, and have tried to install a new driver for the standard vga adapter but so far have had no luck.

I'm not very clued in with this aspect of computers, so I may have missed out on something very basic.Any help is appreciated.

Thanks :)

Hi Bowtie, thank you for the welcome.

My specs are as follows:

Processor: AMD Turion 64 mobile technology ML-34 1.80 ghz

1 GB of RAM

32 Bit os

If you need more could you describe how to get them as going into properties of computer is the only method I know of.

Something I have noticed is that the windows experience rating is at 1.0, I'm almost sure it was higher than that before reinstalling. Also to correct my original post, my first resolution was not as mentioned but full hd.

Looking here it is one of 3 to choose from,

Software & Driver Downloads Compaq Presario V5000 CTO Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

ATI Xpress 200, Nvidia Go 7200/7300/7400, or Intel 945GM. There is also 22 variations of the V5000,

Compaq Presario V5000 Notebook PC series -  Download drivers and software - specify product name - HP Business Support Center

most of which have the ATI in it.

Have you ever installed video drivers before because it's not for the faint hearted

Since when? What's so difficult about it? You download the file, run the exe and the driver installs. Most problems when installing any driver come down to 3 things,

1. Wrong driver to begin with.

2. System or configuration problem that won't allow the driver to install

3. User error.

The problem you are up against is that you are running an out dated video card in the laptop that doesn't have (and never will) a Windows 7 driver (this is the #2 I mentioned above coming into play). That Vista driver from HP/Compaq should work but may require being installed using compatibility mode,

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/316-compatibility-mode.html

Look in Programs and features and if the ATI driver is listed, uninstall it first before trying the above, then install it again using compatibility mode; also right click and select "run as administrator".

I'm not too sure what you mean by "never has and never will", as it was working properly before I uninstalled it.

My graphics card I have is ATI Radeon express but what my windows 7 is running is VGA standard adapter

I'm not too sure what you mean by "never has and never will",

Just what I said, there is not now and never will be a Windows 7 driver for that video chipset. ATI declared it legacy and basically dropped support for it, and seeing as ATI is the only one to write drivers for ATI products HP/Compaq cannot provide anything newer than what they have (not that most laptop manufacturers usually provided much more than the driver that the laptops shipped with whether there was an update from the device manufacturer or not). As a result for any video cards like the one in your laptop the best you can use is the last Vista driver, and for those that are even older the last XP driver.

My graphics card I have is ATI Radeon express but what my windows 7 is running is VGA standard adapter

That means that the driver you tried to install didn't. If it didn't install properly or at all then something is blocking it. Did you try running the installer using Vista compatibility mode and the ran as administrator options?

Failing that check Windows Update and see what it has to offer. In most cases I avoid recommending WU for drivers, but in the case of older hardware like that it usually doesn't make a difference if it is there and used.

Here is an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M Vista Legacy driver 9.8 with Catalyst Suite (Scanned with MSE). You will have to right click on the file>Properties>compatibility tab>check the box run in compatibility mode>drop down menu select Vista>check the box at the bottom run as administrator>apply> run the setup.exe file>and let it install.

I uploaded the file to RapidShare "Free" so you will have to click "Free" then wait for the clock to run down till you can download the file.RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting
If this won't work then please post back as their are a couple other things we can try. Fabe
