A restore question

Selfimage-1.2.1.92

Main features:
- Create 1:1 image files of any mounted (or unmounted on Windows 2000/XP) hard disk partition.
- Can create an image of an entire hard disk, including the master boot record, partition table, and all partitions (Windows 2000/XP)
- Restore previously created images to any partition, even mounted ones, as long as it doesnt have open files.
- On-the-fly compression accelerated with parallel CPU support to take advantage of todays hyperthreaded, multi-core and SMP systems.
- Skip reading a disks "free space", treating it as if it were zero. This decreases the size of a compressed image and makes it process MUCH faster. NEW Version 1.2.0 can now do this for Linux ext2/ext3 partitions as well.
- NEW Available as an experimental BartPE plugin for use in boot/rescue CDs.

jae99- I didn't see Win 7 or the Win 7 Preinstall Environment which is used on a Rescue Disk to be used to restore an Image to Win 7 mentioned at all just Win 2000, XP and an "experimental" Bart PE which is used in Rescue CD's for XP.

The built-in Windows 7 image backup/restore utility will not recognise backups made with third-party utilities.
For this reason, each has it's own bootable CD which you must use for restoring. And as Maxxwire says, SelfImage isn't Windows 7 compatible anyway.

If you want a recommendation for a third-party disk imaging tool, you could do a lot worse than "Active@ Disk Image". I use it to back up all my family's laptops - it's dependable and easy to use.
Active@ Disk Image. Windows & Servers Backup Software. Win XP, 7, 2003, 2008, Vista.

I have Macrium Reflect conveniently installed right on the boot menu of my Win 7 x64 computer which enables me to restore Macrium Reflect Drive Images without having to use rescue media. Macrium Reflect can create a full 8 GB medium compressed Disk Image of my Windows 7 partition in 3 minutes and 30 seconds and restore it in 4 minutes and 40 seconds making this Disk Imaging software quick and convenient to use plus Reflect has never failed on either of my computers.
