A wandering external drive

I have a 2T external USB drive connected to my wife's Win7 machine.

The drive has developed the habit of disappearing from explorer requiring either a physical disconnect/reconnect of the USB attachment or a reboot of the machine.

How do you determine if the problem source is the drive or the machine?

Good reference--I changed to drive's policy to enable the constant read/write and will hold off pending results.
