Abnormal boot-up time

Hi,
My laptop has recently started taking much longer to startup. At the beggining of this year, it was taking around 35/45 seconds to boot to the desktop and be ready to go. Over the last couple of weeks, i have noticed it has been taking longer and longer, it now sometimes takes up to 90 seconds or more, also it takes a particularly long time on the 'Welcome' screen. I know that 90 seconds isn't exactly bad but i don't understand how the time has doubled as there has been no major changes whatsoever. The only changes have been the install of Microsoft Office 2010 in January but as far as i can remember, this made little difference if any at all. I regularly run a registry cleaning programme, defragment the hard drive and scan for viruses etc... I personally don't think this is a case of the laptop just getting slower because of age as i have only had it around 6 months, but please do correct me if i am wrong and my laptop specifications are as follows:

Windows 7 64bit Home Premium
Intel i7 620m @ 2.67GHz
4Gb DDR3 RAM
250Gb 5400rpm Western Digital HDD
-If you need to know anything else please ask :)

Any help or adviced would be mch appreciated,
Thanks, Rob

What has changed the past couple weeks? Think of every little thing, Windows updates? Have you connected to network printers? Other wireless networks/hotspots?

No other programmes have been installed at all, i have checked this in control panel, Service pack 1 was installed earlier this week but this was an attempt to rectify the problem, which it has not done, it hasnt made any difference at all. I haven't connected to any printers or new networks, the only thing i can think of is an updated intel Graphics driver, but again the problem existed before i installed that.

Im not sure if this is any use to you but I work with Win7 at work on a network and I can tell you that if windows is attempting to join or find an unavailible network / domain when it starts up it takes an age to time out and use the local resources. Im not sure whow this translates to a home network but at work we found if you manually switch off the wireless on you laptop it will boot faster. Try booting up with wireless off to troubleshoot if this helps and if it does then look for anything on your system that might be trying to access network resources when it boots.

But yes the simple answer is you have too many programs running at startup. To tell which problem you have. if it takes you ages to boot windows to reach the login screen (or start loading the desktop) then it might be the network issue. if it takes ages to be fully ready after logging in or takes ages to load your desktop and programs then you need to thin out the startup programs.

Hope this helps.

Okay thanks, i'll try disabling wireless then re-boot, im pretty sure its not the programmes that are slowing it down as it spends the majority of the time on the 'welcome' screen, and i don't actually havwe an startup programmes except for 'rocketdock', and of course the operating system etc. Thanks for the reply i'll try re-booting now.

i would manage it with Soluto ( Soluto ). That tells you exactly who the culprits are and which ones you can either stop or delay. Good program.

Okay, thanks, will update the Java in the morning :) and thanks for the link whs, first time i ran the programme i got a boot time of 2min 11sec :S after using it to identify the 'trouble makers' i've got it down to 1min 11sec :) still not great but a massive improvement (Windows media player sharing service taking up 19 seconds :S) Now in the boot, the main thing is 'MS Antimalware' taking up 17 seconds, then 'system', then 'netsvcs' then 'client server runtime process' and so on... (In order of time taken to boot) any advice on which of these can be disabled? (Obviously excuding 'system' :L)
Thanks for the help.

At least once per week here we have performance problems where the OP mentions they use a Registry Cleaner. If you are not using CCleaner Registry tab then it's likely the Registry cleaner you're using is one of many sales scam operations sold through web ads which do nothing, have no genius behind them, and cause compound performance problems after just a short time's use.

Uninstall the Registry cleaner crapware then see if you have a System Restore point you can get back before it's use. If not work through the following troubleshooting steps

If minimizing your Startup programs and the other steps don't help, use the tool which the Pro's use to trace slow startup: Trace Windows 7 boot-shutdown-hibernate-standby-resume issues - MSFN Forums

The Antimalware I would put on a deferred start (maybe 1 minute later). Then you can already work whilst this is loading. Those other system processes I would leave alone. But maybe there are some other minor buggers you can also defer - but do that only if you know what they are.

Okay thanksoyu, I am using 'Uniblue Registry Booster 2011' it seems okay but could this be my problem? I will also but the antimalware on delayed start and try and find out some more about those other processes, if not i'll just leave them :) Thanks for the advice i'll post back soon.

Okay i think that has worked :) Firstly, using the programme 'Soluto' (that whs provided a link for ) i managed to get the boot time down to around 75 seconds by removing certain programmes etc. Now after installing the hotfix seekermeister provided the link for the boot has gone straight down to 52 seconds :D. It's almost down to what it was before, but 52 is good enough for me so i won't worry about that too much, but maybe a bit more tweaking could save a couple more seconds, maybe different security software? I am currently using MSE, is there anything that uses less resources?
Thanks again,
Rob.

The thing that I don't like about Soluto is that it sends data back to Soluto each time that you boot, and if you uninstall it, what ever tweaks that it made are lost.

I have found both MSE and Nod32 to be pretty light, but I uninstalled MSE because of some kind of problem that it caused on my network...I really can't remember what it was now. Of course, Nod32 is a paid program, so that may be a factor for you. What do you use now?
