First of all, I must state that I have read the tutorial on Win XP to Win 7 file sharing - good info.

I have 3 storage drives (all SATA) on a Win 7 Pro 64-bit OS PC. I have a PC with Win XP Pro 64-bit, and a laptop with Win XP Home (32-bit).

2 of the storage drives on the Win 7 PC are identical Western Digital 1TB drives. I have set up sharing for both drives & the permissions are exactly the same. Both XP computers will access one of the drives, but access is denied to the other drive that has the same sharing & permissions.

I'm pretty good dealing with networking, but this has me stumped.

Any suggestions?

Not to sound like an ass, but I'd double check your permissions on both. If you're having trouble accessing one but not the other, I'd guess you typo'd/missed a step somewhere, and that's causing your difficulty. If they were truly both identical, you would have either access to both or access to neither.

No problem, WebAttR, I re-checked & the sharing parameters are identical.

I tried this: I disabled sharing on the inaccessible drive, restarted, then re-enabled sharing on the same drive & restarted. It still will not give access to the XP PCs!

This is very strange.

You can access/use the drive directly from the XP machine, correct?

I'm not sure what you're asking. The two XP machines cannot access the drive that has the drive letter "X", which is a Western Digital 1TB SATA drive. I have another identical Western Digital 1TB drive that has the drive letter "Q" which both XP machines can access via my network.

The two identical drives are in my main PC running Win 7 64-bit. There is no problem accessing either drive on the Win 7 64-bit machine.

I may just try eliminating my entire network & set it up all over again to see if that works - If no one has any other suggestions.

Concerning your last question - do you mean moving the problem drive to the XP machine to see if it can be accessed there?

No, I was confused, and thought the drives were plugged into an XP machine, and wanted to make sure that the drives were functioning/usable from the machine they were plugged into, just to be sure we weren't trying to find a network solution for a dead hard drive. :)

Alright then. Well, if one works, and one doesn't, let's try something. Right click on the drive you're trying to share, and go properties. Click on the security tab, and add "everyone" to the list, and click apply. Having done so, go to the XP machines and try again to access the drive. :)

Bingo! Thanks, WebMattR! I really feel small - I never checked in the Security tab - Only the Sharing tab.

This is a lesson I won't forget!

I know this is an old topic but it helped me today! I searched google and found this thread and fixed my problem with sharing drives in windows 7. Thanks so much. I didn't know I had to create a rule for the group "everyone". I have been looking for months on how to fix this problem but kept getting the simple stuff that I already completed.
