Access network computer

I have 2 Win7 32-bit computers networked in my home.

Computer1 cannot access Computer2. Computer2 shows up in the network screen, but it asks for a username/password. When I do a search, it tells me contact my administrator. I AM the administrator (owner of both machines). So I contacted myself and we still can't figure out the username/password. NOBODY....I repeat....NOBODY uses these computers except ME. Why can't it be simple and just allow me to access Computer2 without all this hassle?

Both Computer1 and Computer2 can "see" each other. Computer2 can access Computer1.

Any way to solve this mind-boggling scenario?

Do you have passwords on both accounts?

As both computers are W7, have you tried setting up a HomeGroup?

OK. That worked. I got past the username/password fields. Now it has, "Windows cannot access \\Office\c" (Office is the name of Computer2)

And then....."You do not have permission to access \\Office\c. Contact your network administrator to request access".

Now what do I do to complete the job of accessing the files on Computer2?

have you setup the network so that both machines are on the same workgroup or have you setup Windows 7 homegroup

I also forgot to mention restart both machines any time you make changes that affect network connectivity

Turning off Password protected sharing and UAC is bad advice. This can seriously reduce the security of your machine.

Check the ACL of your \\Office\c folder and make sure computer 1 is allowed access.

HAM N EGGS:

FOLLOW THIS INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY

You are techinically not the computer administrator of windows7 computer. *lol* As bad as it sounds....microsoft lied to you.

FOLLOW PLS:

1) Search for "cmd" under your search under he start

2) Once you have found "cmd" right click on it, right click "Run as Adminstator"

3) Once the command prompt loads; type: net user administrator /active:yes

4) Hit enter; should say performed sucessfully

5) Log off of your account and under the welcome screen you should see the true
administrator account

6) Log into "that" account; once inside that account; let it load

7) All at once: ALT, CTRL, DEL and choose change password

8) Leave old password blank and create new password and save

***IMPORTANT***
DON'T LOOSE THIS PASSWORD; VERY HARD TO RETRIEVE; WRITE DOWN!



Then do the same with the other computer; use same password

Who mentioned anything about private LANs?

So if i managed to get access past the router, then i wouldn't be able to get into these shared files then no?

password protected sharing is to protect on the LAN side which would be private if someone intrudes from WAN past firewall you have big troubles regardless

Your computer is just asking to be hacked... I can' tell you how many computers i have worked on that the customer has not even had software firewall on it.

First thing i d on my computers. I password protect it and firewall it.

Then I have 2 hardware firewalls on my network.

I am not saying it will stop them but it will sure slow them down

Why don't you just ask the guy to have his computer on the DMZ?

OK, so if i borrowed my neighbours wireless connection, if he didn't have password protected sharing on, then i wouldn't be able to see any files and would be prompted for login credentials if i attempted to do so?
Doesn't seem right to me.

Bottom line; leaving Password protected sharing ON and leaving UAC ON heightens the security on your machine, period.

Firewall

"normally" if you are sharing between PC's you have a hardware firewall involved protecting you from WAN intrusion which is better than a software firewall as far as intrusion attempts from outside where the software firewall has advantage is in controlling outbound connections

if you shared internet connect with your next door person..

and if they are the ones who wanted to be irresponsible about setting up their network then by all means you can see it.

When you set up Windows Vista/Windows 7 they left the true admin blank.

besides guy's everyone has opinions or personal preference I was just try to help get his computers talking to each other which would normally I would remove most security features until communication had been established then reintroduce them one at a time afterward this is a common approach when troubleshooting network connection issues

Thanks to all of you. The problem is now solved. You guys have a wealth of information on this stuff and I've learned a lot today. I printed it all out for future reference (hopefully I'll remember where I put it).
