Got this old laptop out of the cupboard and dusted off the cobwebs and tried to boot.
All that happened was the fans ran for a few seconds then laptop shut down.
Found that when you hold the FN key down while booting it will work properly and load windows.
Immediately you release the FN key it shuts down.
Never heard of this before so any help would be much appreciated

Thanks Greg,
won't work as it does not do anything without holding down the Fn key down. It is acting like a power switch, hold it down and everything works correctly but let the key up and everything shuts down instantly.
Have just replaced the Keyboard with a brand new one still the same.

Try a USB keyboard. If it doesn't help the try disconnecting the laptop keyboard.

Reset the BIOS to defaults: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

Check the Acer website for a newer BIOS version.

From boot mode run all of the repairs given in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start starting with the hardware tests to see if anything will affect it, and if not try wiping the HD to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Working with a boot disk will tell you if its hardware or the OS.

I like to autopsy laptops to learn how they come apart, which sometimes has inadvertently resolved a problem.
