hello nice people and happy new year:

I have an acer ao725 which has just started to display 9%charging and wont go past that. I think it started happening after some windows updates were installed but I couldn't swear to it.

I got 2 warnings about interference with sleep mode, which I don't use. I use battery mode to watch downloaded movies and this just started happening

How old is the laptop? As far as Windows is concerned it only displays what the battery circuitry tells it. Likely your battery needs to be replaced. Either way it is a hardware issue.

Does the Acer Power Management feature which might be preinstalled on your laptop have any testing mechanism? If not check the Acer Support webpage for your model to see if there are battery alerts or recalls posted, any Downloads for Power features, etc. If it's still within a year of purchase its covered for replacement and tech support. Otherwise I'd search for replacement batteries online using the Acer model cross referencing the Battery Model and Serial numbers. This takes some search savvy so if you need help ask back and someone will help you. I can usually replace a battery with fairly decent replacement part inexpensively but it takes work to make sure you're getting the accurate and best choice.

alright

the comp is about 3 years old.

I will look for batteries.

the power supply is 14.8v. could I use a car battery or a motorcycle battery for power direct to the cord?
i.e. would it work on 12.5v?

No you need a laptop battery that matches the specs if not the model number of the one you're replacing.

Look mate if you were in the middle of the Gobi desert and that is all you had then I suppose you could give it a shot but seriously most laptops work off a 19v adaptor and at around 4 amps . Now if you hooked up a motorcycle battery to it and there was some small leakage then the current delivered by that battery would fry the machine in a cloud of blue smoke. The power adaptors these days are so cheap go and get one see this for an example AC Adapter FOR Acer Aspire ONE 725 756 AO725 AO756 Notebook Power Supply Charger | eBay
or
Amazon.com: Laptop Notebook Charger for Acer Aspire One AO756 AO725 AOD270 (All Models) Adapter Adaptor Power Supply "Laptop Power" Branded (Power Cord Included): Computers & Accessories

Frankly if you do use anything else but the right thing then you deserve to end up with a pile of charcoal.

I'm not sure why you would want to do something like a car battery or something. Today's computers are made with some sophisticated wiring and voltage regulators which are quite sensitive to the voltage, watts and amps going into them. If you put the wrong current to them they will either refuse to work or more likely will melt. If you don't want a big pile of melted plastic and fried computer parts, I would suggest you get the proper battery for you computer. There really are no if's, and's or but's about it. You are either going to get the right thing it needs or end up with a pile of melted parts at best or a big explosion at worst. Either buy the correct thing for it or buy a new computer. No other options.
