This is my noob experience of the £699 4 months ago 17.3" multi spec't acer aspire model 7535g:o

ATI mobilty 4570 radeon twin graphcs job

£12.78 buys two discs to get me from vista 32 home premium to windows 7 home premium 32bit

1 upgrade disc and 1 windows 7 media disc

I decide to go with a clean install so i changed boot sequence in bios to cd first, then booted from the windows 7 media disc.

option 2 custom install i managed to delete partitions which made my restore discs effectivley scrap.

realizing there was no way back, i had to instal windows 7

all went silky smooth untill the device radeon 4000 series had code 10 cannot start :sarc:

i let windows 7 update this device - rebooted...the screen never came back...the machine was ON,signal up and everything but no raster, just a mouse curser.

hmm... rebooted in safe mode, rolled back driver....screen ok but still the graphics 4570 is code 10 and cannot start.

so i inserted the acer upgrade dvd
and ran all EXCEPT the amd puma driver
rebooted
all ok
then i ran the puma driver, rebooted and the screen never came on...backlighting but no picture.

Holding down the power button i just turned it off, rebooted, pressed f7 or 8 whatever key for safe mode and chose
ENABLE LOW-RESOLUTION VIDEO (640x480)
enter...
starting windows...4/3 aspect:confused:

right click - screen resolution
change to 1600 x 900 (recommended)
no more errors:cool:

Superten, first thanks for sharing your result
Win7 is usually pretty good to manage the necessary drivers for your hardware. I am puzzled in this case that it wants to download a driver for the 3200 for your 4570? I would go to ATI site and download the most updated one from there.

Superten - sounds like Windows is benchmarking the HD3200 rather than the HD4570, with a score of 3.8 for graphics. The laptop should switch between the graphics chipsets depending on if its plugged into the mains or not. Since upgrading to Windows 7, I've had no luck getting it to run with the HD4570 - it just won't switch over to it, and playing WoW at 15fps sucks big time, when Vista was playing it at 30fps with everything set to max.

It seems everyone is having this problem. Windows 7 just won't let the 4570 work - ATI PowerExpress is meant to switch between the two graphics cards.

If anyone comes up with a solution let us know?

Thanks.

Strangerer and strangerer. Windows downloaded a new driver for the HD3200 last night via the Windows Update service. It's 9.6mb in size. Since downloading that, and restarting the computer, the HD3200 seems to have dropped off the radar in Catalyst and I've only got the one display now, run by the HD4570.

The HD3200 is showing up fine in the Device Manager, but the computer still isn't switching between them when I plug/unplug the mains. The fact that it's now running on the HD4570, and I can play games again, has pacified me and hell of a lot, though. I can live with it now, even with the 1.5 hour battery life. ;)

Oh, forgot to mention, when I use ATI PowerXpress, the Current active Graphics Processing Unit box is empty, although the icon shown is the chip 'n' battery, implying it's using the power-saving GPU. Checking the box for "Automatically select power-saving GPU when on battery" does nothing - the checkbox clears when you hit OK/Apply, and clicking the 'High-performance GPU' and 'Power-saving GPU' buttons does nothing much.

A few people have reported success getting the higher powered GPU to work. I don't know how you managed it, but I've also got to the same kind of stage as you (no Power Xpress but running on 4570 instead of 3200). I've detailed how I did it in: http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-...d-4570-not-working-after-win-7-upgrade-4.html

If anyone wants to try it, let me know if it works. Might be interesting for you thundercat as it might explain why yours is working if you did something similar without realising.

I've kind of figured out what's been going wrong, but I have no idea WHY it's doing it. I think we'll have to just wait for ATI or Acer to launch a more Windows 7 friendly catalyst control centre and Power Xpress.

Are you saying that you got a clean install upgrade of Win7 on your Acer uising only the Win7 upgrade media disk, and NOT using the second disk they provide which has drivers, apps and bloatware?

If you are not using the apps disk, are you able to get Works and those apps you want some other way?

I realize Win7 installer is very good with drivers, followed up by Windows Updates with more, but what I am trying to understand is if these manufacturers' upgrades can be completely clean installed without bloatware while still getting the apps like Works which one might want.

I had the same problem with the two graphics cards after my upgrade to Windows 7, I did the upgrade path as I hadn't managed to back up my system and wanted to get away from Vista lol...

Any way, after all the updates, software removal and then the upgrade I too was stuck with the lowly version. I have all updates required and wanted by windows 7 as well as the ATI CCC and that cannot change between graphic cards. I eventually managed to get it to work on the HD4570 card by playing around with the graphic properties in Windows 7. On my PC it should both cards as separate display monitors, and if I selected to use the 2nd one it created like a second display i.e no icons or windows (but no easy way back to the other screen). However after a few reboots and playing with the options I managed to get it working on the right card, though as above the reduced battery life is a compromise you have to live with until Windows and ATI get a driver that works correctly...

My settings are as follows:

Display: 2. Mobile PC Display (1. Mobile PC Display is the 3200 version)
Resolution: 1600 x 900 (recommended)
Orientation: Landscape
Mulitple displays: Show Desktop only on 2

As I mentioned it took a few reboots, and didn't always take to the settings I was after but now it runs with a graphics rating of 4.1

Hope this might be of help to someone...

Just a quickee

Hi folks, don`t know if you`ve solved the problem but my solution under post
Stoo All Works Fine!!
takes you step by step thro setting up both cards to work as intended.

If you don`t feel like re-installing your whole system start from step 6.

Good luck, Stoo :-)

PS if all goes well why not hit the scales on my post and add to my rep.
