Hi all i have an acer aspire 7720G and my gpu died.
my old gpu was an nvidia geforce 8400m gs (256mb mxm type ii card)
i have removed the card purchased a 9600m GT model (1gb) and no matter what i do in device manager it only displays standard VGA graphics adapter.

I check online on nvidia's official site and the applet detects my gpu the 9600m gt no problem but when i download drivers it refuses to install it try's to install but never gets past stage one and displays compatibility issues. i really do not know what to do any more please sumone help as im bashing my head against a brick wall :P

What driver does Win7 want for the device? Check optional Windows Updates after enabling Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware.

First establish a Clean boot since some of the old driver's bloatware may still be stuck running in msconfig>Startup or msconfig>Services. Uncheck everything in both places except your AV and stickies/gadgets/Skydrive if you use them. Make sure to Hide All MS services first in msconfig>Services, reboot afterwards.

Then if Updates doesn't deliver a driver try the Nvidia one again.

If these steps fail run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to see if the device might be the rare incomptible GPU. It might even need to be installed in Vista or XP mode Compatibility Mode

the driver W7 is after is the latest 306.23 WHQL. im going to try the msconfig idea. i have just formated and completey cleaned the Hardrive, i have tried the W7UA and tried compatibility mode and no luck with either. is it a possability that i may have purchased a faulty card? and i keep hearing things about a modded INF file etc coudl you shine any light on what the inf is and what it does etc :D

Did you try anything I suggested before reinstalling?

Did you follow the Best Practices in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to get a perfect reinstall, including how drivers are handled in WIn7?

Try reinstalling the card again, checking the connections are good. Run optional Windows Updates after enabling Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware.

If the device does need a modded INF driver then you'll find the information when googling it on the web. But first try all available Win7 and Vista drivers from the manufacturer's Support Downloads webpage for the model card.
