acer erecovery management

hi. i'm just confused about one of the options of the acer erecovery management,
the "restore operating system and retain user data" option. i'm thinking of
using it actually.

my current OS is windows7. originally, my OS was vista. there is also a backup OS for windows vista in my laptop (the one in the hidden partition).

i just want to ask: if i use the "restore operating system and retain user data"
option, will i be able to retain and use my windows7? and not the vista?

If your recovery partition has vista and you have win7 now on the system partition, I doubt you'll be able to use the erecovery options at all. Even if they work, they'll restore vista. If you ever want to restore vista, you'll probably need to mark the recovery partition active, then boot to it.

Once you overwrite with another OS, recovery partitions dont really make too much sense. Best strategy is to first backup an image of the current OS, then reinstall the new OS. That gives you a painless way of reverting to the earlier OS.

Exactly replicating an OEM recovery partition is difficult, but you can indeed create the equivalent of having a win7 install dvd as a partition.

If you would like to have such a partition, one option is to image the install to a another partition on the hdd using software like Acronis True Image. Recovery can be launched in an F10 like fashion.

Another option is to image using macrium reflect, then restore from the image.

Both acronis and macrium will restore the system to what it was at the time of imaging.

1) Part of the Ops question is answered - he'd get back Vista. The option still puzzles me as an owner of an Acer. I think you get back the factory recovery plus your personal folders.

2) Acer (Backup Manager) has provided its own imaging backup capability in the past (via a 3rd party provider). You can restore from this image stored on external media or the factory recovery from the hidden recovery partition. If the hard drive fails the factory recovery can be achieved using the recovery disks (~2) you make early on or buy from Acer.

3) For standard imaging I would use MS built in system and/or one of the popular third party applications (I use MS and Macrium).
I think it is a good idea to retain the Acer recovery partition for reasons including if you want to resell your PC. The Windows OS is tied to the PC.
Macrium Reflect will allow you to image and recover the hidden partition which is useful when replacing the HDD should it fail.

Hi everybody!
I'm new and don't speak English very well, so hope you'll forgive any mistakes..
About 1 week ago, I removed by an accident the partition containing Acer eRecovery tool.
I'm running Ubuntu now, from a USB flash drive, cause I can't recover Windows 7 Home Premium.
I have to send my PC in warranty, cause I realised it has a hardware problem (before removing it, Acer eRecovery didn't work, anyway), but I'd prefer to send with the default components, so that they couldn't find an excuse not to repair it free.
Can I download the eRecovery tool from somewhere and install it on my PC again?
