I have an Acer X1300 and I have been trying to install 7 using the Acer Upgrade Wizard sent to me in the "upgrade kit" I received. My current OS is Vista Home Premium 64.

I can only get as far as the screen that asks for my model and it will only allow me to select from the notebook list and I can not go to the desktop list, so I can go no further with the install.

I contacted Acer support and was told to do a clean install. I have been using this computer for a couple of months now and it has all of my apps and files on it (new and the ones I transferred from my old XP machine). Also it is working great.

I think that a clean install is a pretty drastic step for what appears to me to be a failure in the Acer software (Acer Upgrade Wizard).

Would it be possible to install directly from the windows 7 disc without running the upgrade wizard?

Is there a clean copy of Win7 Upgrade installer included in the "kit" Acer sent?

If so, you can try booting from it to do a custom clean install.

First back up all of your files and, if possible, a HDD image using a program like free Macrium. This way you can easily reimage your HDD if operations fail.

Others have described an Acer two disk Upgrade set with a clean copy WIn7 upgrade disk which can be booted to do a clean install, and an apps/drivers disk which also contains the dreaded bloatware and might not be needed since Win7's installer is excellent with drivers - almost all you need are included in it or are quickly provided by Windows Updates.

Your model will also have a product download page where you can find any drivers.
Only if you rely on Works do you need that apps disk, and copies of Works can be found elsewhere, like Adobe reader/flash and Java runtime can easily be googled.
