I have an Acer Aspire 5551 notebook and today i plugged in my friend's blackberry and now my USB ports will not detect anything i plug in, no beeps or warnings just no response. Acer has no USB drivers on their site for my machine only for the card reader... In my device manager everything shows up working, no yellow marks...so thinking not a driver issue. If it was power issue sure it would show it somewhere?? My friend decided to plug it into my laptop after her phone did the exact same thing to my E-machines desktop running XP Pro...Lucky Me...I have no USB ports now please help!!!

Thank You,
Brian.

I hope you did not suffer any damage to your usb port. Perhaps you can try to restore your computer to a previous date.

Let us know how System Restore to before the failure works.

Are there errors in the Event Viewer>Admin view since the failure?

Got off the phone with Acer Support...the lady with the heavy accent was very pleasant and informative. She told me to do System Restore and I have done so back to the 16th. Still no yellow marks in device manager everything says working properly. My flash drive still has no response but my blackberry power symbol shows up and charges but will not detect as a device in Computer. She recommended a "Full System Recovery" basically re-format. I really hope I don't have to do that I just bought this thing less than a month ago...I do a lot of computer work for others but no experience with windows 7 or vista and first time ever seeing a problem with USB.

thank you for replying...

I would pursue what Acer Tech Support instructs you to do because this may well require an RMA to replace hardware.

You can back up a Win7 backup image externally now so you can get back to where you were after this is resolved.

In the meantime, you can run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html to make sure System Files aren't corrupted, or a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R which reinstalls the OS while keeping everything else in place.

But you want to at least appear to be fully cooperating and being led by Tech Support as it could very likely require hardware replacement for this.

Out of an abundance of caution I would first run a full boot scan with Avast5 after installing and Updating. Or use one of these boot scans from CD: http://www.techmixer.com/free-bootable-antivirus-rescue-cds-download-list/

Thanks for reply...I tried the SFC scan and it found nothing. I think I'm just going to make a backup and call Acer back for the Recovery...my desktop I will probably rip open and replace like I normally do lol...I wanna keep this thing intact and not void warranty. I just don't understand if it's getting power why it's not detecting anything. Will update once I figure this out.
