acitvation error after upgrading

just got a s/h laptop whereby the seller said he's put a fresh copy w7 enterprise fully activated. I cannot be 100% positive but I am sure when I got it yesterday it said 'activated' I run an update and it did 60 updates and soon after a windows is not genuine popper came up. I looked and said it needed to be activated. I have tried going online but it's rejected.

I will go back to the seller but thought I would get your opinion first just in case he tries to fob me off

The installed Key is a KMS Volume License Key - which requires regular re-activation at the provider's private activation servers.
Is there a COA sticker on the case of the machine? (seeing as it's a Dell, it's probably inside the battery compartment) (or a Windows 8 sticker)
If so, for what version and edition is it valid??
It's almost certainly for Windows 8 and not Windows 7 - and as such this sale was fraudulent and the install consequently counterfeit, since KMS Keys are only valid within the issuing organisation, and cannot be sold for any reason (they are freely available anyhow, since it's the server that is licensed rather than the client), and cannot be transferred outside the activating organisation.

Depending on the actual model purchased, it may qualify for a Windows 7 downgrade - but that doesn't use this type of Key, and MUST be installed using Dell's Recovery media for Windows 7, and not something off-the-shelf.

Go back to the vendor and threaten them with a visit from Trading Standards or the police if you don't get satisfaction. They have, from your account, committed fraud, false advertising, and a number of other offences.

I have sent him an email. The laptop has a w7 pro oa sticker on the bottom but he said he'd installed a fresh copy of enterprise. Not sure why but I will check see.

can I not just reformat and install a copy of pro using the numbers on the sticker?

There is no such thing as a machine that can be sold retail with a legal copy of Enterprise installed - either Windows or Office.
Both are Volume License Only products, and as such, they are valid ONLY within the organisation that received the appropriate licenses from authorised distributors.
the act of sale (except in bulk by distributors) renders the license invalid, whatever the machine's own license.

I'm surprised that the machine appears to have a windows 7 COA sticker - the BIOS is dated Jan 2014, and so far as I am aware the only machines that Dell have sold for over a year have been Windows 8/Pro with potential downgrade licenses.
This makes me suspect that the sticker itself may be counterfeit.
Unless Dell is mentioned on the sticker itself, my suspicions would be greatly increased.

Check the Dell site, and enter the machine's service tag code - what does the system summary say about it? when was it manufactured and what OS and accessories did it ship with?

There are two big differences between Enterprise/Ultimate and Pro - Bitlocker support, and MUI support. Enterprise and Ultimate are identical products apart from licensing.

Yes - assuming the COA sticker is genuine, then a reformat/reinstall using Pro media and the COA Key would work fine.
You purchased what was supposed to be a higher grade of OS, and (presumably) Office - you should at least demand a substantial refund for the non-delivery of the advertised goods (not to mention the hassle)
I'm very tempted to ask for details of the vendor and the price - simply so that I can report them myself, even if you elect not to do so should they 'play the white man' and refund you for the full purchase price and shipping on return of the goods.

the bios was updated by me when I purchased the machine as some of the drivers were missing so I went for everything Dell had to bring it up to date.

I don't need enterprise or ultimate as it's a business machine and never really bought it because of that so a downgrade to pro is more than acceptable plus it will return it to factory which if he had asked me I would have wanted in any case.

I will format the ssd and start over. I believe there is a tutorial of the how and why.
