Activation after fresh install

My father has a Toshiba NB200 notebook running Windows XP (which is no longer supported) and after having malware problems he asked me if I could upgrade it to Windows 7 for him. As it has no optical drive I downloaded a Microsoft iso file and created a bootable USB drive.

I have successfully installed Windows 7 Home Premium and done all the Windows updates. When asked to activate I tried the code on the label that was supplied on the notebook with the original Windows XP - it didn't work. So I phoned Microsoft to buy a genuine key but they said they can't help me as they no longer sell Windows 7 (only Windows 8 now). I know my dads Toshiba will not run Windows 8 and that even if it did my father (83) would never get his head around how it works.

So I tried a code that I had from and old dead laptop and it has changed the Product ID and still will not activate. Now I'm not sure if I buy a genuine key whether it will work with the changed Product ID (which
is an OEM for an Acer laptop).

Can I change the Product ID or will a genuine licence code work with it as it is?

Where would be the best place to buy a product key (don't need to buy the discs as they can't be used on his notebook)? I've had a look online but can't tell who is genuine and who are dodgy.

Any help would be appreciated.

You do need a new product key and install media.

You can buy a System Builder OEM from scan.co.uk. They are 100% genuine and completely reliable.

Give them a call to see if they have a x64 version, if the laptop can run that.

Thanks for the info.

Can I not just re-install the iso that I have and then buy a key?

When you purchase you get the installation media anyway, so I would install that to be sure its clean. I dont know of any place that just sells keys anymore.

So having made a successful installation and spent hours doing all the online updates have I really got to wipe the drive and start all over again?

Is there no way of activating the install I have already made? Or repairing the install so I can activate with a genuine key?

It depends where you got the .ISO from. If you trust it -- and I wouldn't -- you purchase the product from Scan, then activate with the key on the COA.

However, I would get rid of the dodgy Office installation which stands out like dogs bollocks:

Like these guys are saying, you should always be careful of where you get your .ISO from. Looking at the site you linked too and where the .ISO's are linked from, I would been confident in saying that they are good to use. When we have to download .ISO's for jobs, these are the links provided to us from our purchases from Microsoft.

Don't know were you are located, but like was said, check around and find a new OEM copy of the software. Even if you don't use the disk, the key should give you no problems. If you know of any local refurbishers, you might contact them and see if they might be able to help you obtain a license key through the refurbisher program.

The only problem in using an OEM copy, is that you technicially don't get any support from Microsoft, the "OEM builder" is supposed to provide tech support for that computer/os installation.
