Activation problem - tries to use a wrong key but can't change

I installed Win 7 on my old laptop. Never asked for a product key. Tried to do an online activation and it failed without offering me a chance to change the key to my correct one. It seems to think there is an existing key and just goes ahead with that and fails. How and where can I store my correct product key? I need to activate Win 7 before upgrading to Win 10
