Are animated ads supposed to prevent the display from turning off? I was idle for 20 minutes but the screen will not turn off. I will try a antivirus check later.

Animated ads are design to sell you something. That it.
If for what ever reason you leave a open web page on your computer for 20 min. your computer could see the activity of the animated ads and the screen will stay on.
I'm not quite sure why one would leave their computer for 20 min with a open browser.

Where was the add?
On your desktop or in your browser?

If on your desktop, then no, there shouldn't even be any adds there so it's most likely malware.
If in your browser, then no as well. Adds can prevent your browser from being turned off and can, just as video's, make the screen stay active.

If I were you I'd run a full scan with your anti virus and maybe as well with Malwarebytes and ESET Online Scanner just to be sure.
:ar: Malwarebytes free
:ar: ESET Online Scanner (Should be ran using Internet Explorer)

Good luck and keep us posted,
Nommy

It was on the browser. Don't worry. I have done a very thorough scan. I guess it is just a coincidence that this is the first time a ad was being viewed when i was idle. Hmm... I guess my brain tricked me. I will make sure tommorow to make sure it is not a problem with the pc. Should I try sfc /scannow if the screen does not turn of after 20min idle time?

Never mind. Just left my pc idle for 20min and screen did turn off. Guess you are right Layback Bear. It was just the animation causing the screen to stay on. It was just me who thought this was the first time the screen stayed on because of animation.
