Add on cards for extra USB3 ports, please recommend a decent one!

I have a Gigabyte MB that has lost a pin on the one and only internal USB header port, so only one of the two external USB ports works. I did buy a PCIE add on card giving extra external ports but it died relatively quickly. Could anyone please recommend a decent card,with an on card internal header, ideally one that supports fairly high current draw devices? OS in Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. I think some cards use external power for their ports? I am confident doing surface mount component changes but being a multi layer board (probably VERY multi layer!) I have cried off trying to use a needle to push out the broken pin and fit a replacement from a scrap MB, call me a wimp if you will

Both of those are junk. They use only one PCI-e lane, which doesn't come even close to having enough bandwidth to support all those ports even close to full speed.

This is a much better one. It supposedly uses 4 PCI-e lanes.

Thanks for the links. the first one seems odd in that it has two cable ports on the card but not the sort that takes the 19 pin plug to the front panel ports, never seen one like that before, you'd have to feed two extension cables out of the case somehow...?


The Startech ones seems nice I will probably go with that, although the price is hefty Thanks again.

I like the Startech..Amazon has them cheaper..Just make sure you get the right model because some of them don't have dedicated ports..
I can use up to 4 c920's on them with no problem.

I think there is an online manual on the startech site you can review before you buy so you're getting what you need..

With the US$124 you can buy a good MoBo.
Never seen a USB3.x device that takes advantage of the high speed communication (625MBps of USB3.0). Not even a SATA 3 HDD on a USB3.0 case.
What devices you intent to use on the USB3.0?

Why would you spend $124 for a card you can get for $86 on both Amazon and NewEgg?
