Adding an additional GMAIL account?

I am trying to add a new and totally seperate and independant, Gmail account from my own, for my wife. But when we try to do this, we get an error message, something to the effect that there is already a Gmail account at this address. Can someone tell me how to go about doing this, and explaining it it very basic easy to read, laymans terms. Im not very advanced. I appreciate it.

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Have you already added a account inside the other account ?
Open gmail,
On the top right where it shows your email address for the logged in user,
Add account ?

With separate gmail accounts I would also suggest separate windows user accounts
