Having more than a little trouble grasping how to add a new refurbished Dell Lattitude E6240 laptop running Win7 Pro 64 bit to an existing home network. Here's the map of that network:

Kw39UED.jpg

(The unknown device denoted by the huge question mark is a Motorola Surfboard cable modem.)

I'm fully able to work online, this post being a prime example. What I cannot do is physically connect the laptop via Ethernet cable to my router and it be discovered, go online and work with it.

I need specific and exact instructions how to create a new network that would include the laptop and it be able to be removed and re-connected from time-to-time for updating or sharing files----this laptop would not normally be online except for downloading new information and sharing (transferring) data to the home PC (also running Win7 Pro 64 Bit. I'm as dumb as a newborn with most of this so keep that in mind. :)

I hope this is making sense----I'll try to explain further if that'd be helpful.

Thanks so much in advance---grateful for any help at all!

It should be dead simple plug in the network cable and it should pick it up all by its self and you should be able to get the internet

I've done that repeatedly and nothing, not a single action takes place.

Where do I go from here?

Okay I get this:

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name.....................JWLT
Primary DNA Suffix (blank space)
Node Type Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled No
WINS Proxy Enabled No

C:\Users\J W>

I'm sure those no's are meaningful---not sure how or if they should be yes's.

Are you sure you typed ipconfig /all not just ipconfig as it shows no network adapter is there any yellow triangle in device manager?

Are you sure you typed ipconfig /all not just ipconfig as it shows no network adapter is there any yellow triangle in device manager?

Yes I did---just did it again to make sure I'd typed it all correctly--same results as above.

In Device Manager there is a list under Other Devices that include:

Broadcom USH
Ethernet Controller
Mass Storage Controller
Network Controller
PCI Serial Port
PCI Simple Communications Port
SM Bus Controller
Unknown Device

Each of those lines have the dreaded Yellow Triangles---opening any of those I get this:

"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver"

When I enter into the Properties feature of any of those lines and go to the Driver tab and then select Driver Details which gets me this:

"No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device."

That happens with each and every line I list above. Text in quotations is verbatim what I'm reading off the screen.

Thanks again--appreciate the patience and help!

Thats why it doesn't work. On another pc you need to goto Dells website enter the tag number off the pc and download the drivers then transfer to the pc via fax or USB and run them when it should then work

Sounds good----would I download drivers for each of those devices or is there one "global" driver?

Hi JWA,

I think that doing as samuria suggests by going to Dells website, entering the tag number off of the PC, will give you the indication of whether you will have to download each driver individually or as a consolidated package.

I hope this helps!

I'll indeed check Dell's site and grab what might work---could even possibly use their chat support feature and see what they have to say.

I'll keep everyone updated in case this is an issue for others.

Okay so to update my thread here---have the laptop up and working just fine now---with the help of a friend who knows his do-do. :) Seems I had a few settings completely wrong, he was able to find and correct that in almost no time at all. (I don't know what settings were wrong as he works too fast but it was definitely something I did and no fault of the laptop.)

So this is resolved and I once again thank those here who helped.

I am glad that you have found a solution to your problem/question .
It is a shame that you don't know exactly what he done or the settings etc he changed. I only say this because it would have helped others who visit this thread with the same problem/question find the answer.

I agree completely and if he weren't so pressed for time when we did all this I'd have asked what I did wrong and what was needed to undo my screw ups. :-)

I'll be back in contact and try to get a better answer to post here. Sorry for the long time between replies--I hope any follow up will happen much quicker.
