Adding Memory

I'm going to be adding some extra memory to the XPS 8700 I just got recently. It has 8GB and there are two other slots to add 4GB more. I need all I can get as my system has a couple of Digital post processing software that should run better with a little more memory. Would this be a good choice? Two of those wold give me 16GB.

Col the first thing you need to find out mate is how much RAM that machine (motherboard will support. I have had a look and it is very difficult to track down just what it will. The only thing I can see is the higher end models for example the one that cost another $200 more than yours with the i7 comes with 16GB and the one above it 32GB. But it may be that the model you have will not take more than 8GB perhaps 16GB but you would need to find out - don't forget anything you do affects the warranty.

It came with two 4GB cards in two slots and I think 16GB is the limit. I just added the pair of 4GB sticks recently. At any rate, it's enough for me, being use to much less, this is a Ferrari!!

Well Col if you want as much as you can why not just add 2 x 4GB sticks if the budge t can stretch to it. If you do then try and get either a pair so they are more closely matched or 1 x 8GB stick.
Do you know what brand RAM you already have? If not use this

Using HW Info general components

Download HW Info andpick the right bit version - HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download -(copy and paste this site into the search bar) If you do not need the runninginformation in the smaller right hand panel close it. In the left hand windowclick on the + for the individual device groupings and they will open out tothe various components.

Go on opening out furtheruntil you get to the device itself. click on it and it will highlight. In theright hand window there will be a very detailed description of that device asin brand, speeds model number etc etc These are very detailed and are just whatis needed for searching for drivers etc.

See my pic for anexample - in this I have opened out one my components and then highlighted one of the one you need andyou can see the detail.

I already have 16GB total installed. I got the 2-4GB kit from Crucial the other day and it's working great.
