Can you go to your disk management (control panel>Admin tools>Computermanagement>Disk management)
Does it show your drive there?
If it does right click and assign letter.
If it doesnt does it show up in your device manager (also found via control panel)

You'll probably need to power up the external ... (if connected via SATA or eSATA) ...
then boot the computer ... before it will see the external.
Did you follow this power up sequence ??

Just rebooted system and device manager does not recognize the HD I think the HD is DEAD!!!!
Or the "box" (enclosure) or power brick is dead.
Can you install it internally to see if the HDD is running ??

That would be my guess also ...
and It's been my experience that an enclosure can be less reliable than the HDD that's in it.

But your term "in a case" can mean several things ..
What's the Make n Model ... or did you install it in the computer.

Does it show in disk manager as unallocated space? If so, rt. click and choose 'create simple volume' and follow the steps.

Rt. click the partition and click on delete volume. Then try rt. click and create new simple volume. If that isn't an option you may have to also delete partition to get to unallocated space. I can't remember for sure off the top of my head.
