Adhoc Network and ICS

Hi All,

I've been using Windows 7 for while. I share the internet connection with iPod Touch by using Ad-hoc network. It was working fine and suddenly one day stopped asking me to "Turn on Internet connection sharing". I've tried several methods including manually setting the sharing option in network properties. It did not work.

I had setup Ubuntu Linux in my system. I installed within Windows (without creating a new partition) and I tried to setup adhoc in that too. But I failed to connect. Later I removed my Ubuntu Installation.

After long time I setup ubuntu again and suprisingly it shows a previously created adhoc network. I can't figure out what's really happening with my wireless IF.

Could you please help to reset everything and help me to turn in ICS in Windows.

I am running Windows 7 ultimate edition

Hi and welcome to the forums .

Please can you ensure that your WLAN drivers and Ethernet/Modem drivers are up to date.

Please can you ensure that Windows is up to date.

If this solves the problem woohoo, but I doubt it will.

Can you please install Connectify (Connectify - Turn your Windows 7 laptop into a Wi-Fi Hotspot). Connectify is a little program written for Seven which allows you to create, manage and maintain an ad -hoc network from your PC.

If this installs and allows you to create a hotspot problem solved; the problem you are experiencing is to do with Windows and not to do with a dodgy driver etc. You will have to use Connectify to manage your hotspot but in many ways Connectify is better than the built in Windows utility.

If it doesn't install or setup correctly can you please post any error messages that appear, this is most likely to be the case and from here we can troubleshoot the problem in detail.

If you have any problems or questions don't feel afraid to ask.

Oli

Thank you Oli for your reply. My Windows is up to date. I am running Avast as my Anti Virus.

I tried connectify also. It reported following error.

Failed to configure a private interface.
Make sure your wireless card is turned on, and that the Virtual Wi-Fi Miniport is not disabled.

I could not see any Virtual Wi-Fi miniport device under the device manager.

Something you installed, or else something you did, has disabled the ICS service, and without it you cannot use Ad-Hoc.

Check your services and see if it is disabled - if so, enable it.

Thank you for your quick reply.

The settings for Internet Connection Sharing is "manual" and not started. When I manually tried to start the service, it automatically stopped and given the following message.

The Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.

Hmmm, then that is working fine.

Have you changed anything recently, or installed a new anti virus program / firewall?

No. I did not change anything. The only instance I can remember is,I saved the adhoc network. After that every time I restarts, the very same network automatically created but not displayed. After that I managed to remove this network but now the ICS is showing in the Ad-Hoc Wizard. Is there anyway to reset everything.? Otherwise I will have to format my system :(
