Hi All-

win7 noob here.

trying to get my admin shares working. i can still access my xp machine using admin shares from win7, but i can not reach my 2 win7 machines using \\pc name or ip\c$

i confirmed my settings in secpol.msc to allow classic - local users authenticate themselves under network access sharing. even enabled guest. i have my account setup on each machine, but i just get a login box saying access denied.

shared folders work just fine btw.

any tips would be great.

thanks -Low

hi

If you want to share the root of drives you could try adding another share manually rather than using the system shares (c$,D$ Etc.).

This is I believe related to the enhanced security in Windows 7 over XP which reserves the old system shares for the system only.

You may also have to adjust the File permissions in addition to share permissions to allow access to the actual root

I share with vista and hwth XP by addin shares named after the drive name IE my d: drive root is shared as DATA which works without issue

thanks for the reply.

i will do exactly that for access.

one of my machines just gave a bsod while downloading itunes. it appears to crash everytime my dl speed exceeds 1.2mb? well that doesn't make since since i have down lots of file movement over the lan....

i know i have a chipset driver(acpi) issue with the p5kc asus board, but everything else is running great so i hoped it wouldn't be an issue. i booted back in xp pro on the machine for now. too bad cause i really like win7.

i think i will try a different lan driver and see if that helps.

i assume i pick vista drivers to use in win7?

I tend to use the built in drivers for most things, guess I'm lucky that my set-up is well served for native drivers :)
Would suggest that the manufacturers (motherboard) website is best for integrated items, but if that doesn't work the actual chip manufacturer's site can sometimes be a source.

A few manufacturers are already supplying W7 drivers but if not the vista drivers usually work :)

thanks again Nigel!

i tried the latest asus chipset driver with no luck. i will try there latest lan driver next. the bsod said it was a driver issue, so not sure if its the chipset or possible lan driver.

than i will try the individual components manufacturers like you suggested.

the other 2 machines work great with the stock win7 drivers that came with rc 7201. well so says the device manager anyways. :D

sweet! the Atheros site had an updated vista/win7 driver for my GB network card.
strange i needed the br's when i was in OSX, but not win7?
win7 showed a PC issue with the card after i booted back in to win7 after a crash with a link to there site. pretty nifty. lets see if i get any more bsod's.

I can't say for sure, but at least with W7 Enterprise edition, you can still access admin shares. I use an XP workstation at work and access the C$ share of my Windows 7 workstations all the time. So there may be a policy in place somewhere that is allowing or disallowing this access.
