I have been installing programs on my new set-up, and I have starting have administrator problems. When trying to install (or delete) some programs I get a note that says "To install the software you must have administrator's rights..." But I do; I am the only user of the computer, I have the administrator's rights. The control panel section on user accounts lists only me, and it says that I am an Administrator. What am I missing? What do I have to do to be able to install (and delete) stuff?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The first user account is not a full admin account. SO programs written for XP or earlier that just assume that the user is an admin like "usual", may try to install things inproperly or in a way that required administrator access.

99% of the time you just right click the installer icon and say "Run as administrator" and it installs fine.

THere are several system level things you you need to escalate your privileges to complete. This is normal and is a step in the right direction towards a secure system. You have to do it on Mac and Linux and it can be MUCH more cumbersome than the way windows handles it.

So don't worry too much about it. It's VERY rare that you would have to activate the true local admin account. But if you do, google for "Activating Windows 7 Administrator account". (Might by in the tutorials section of this site too)

Please do not disable UAC.

"Get used to it" instead, it gets in your face when setting up a new machine but after that you'll rarely run into it. Windows has been far too insecure for far too long, it's time people start to get used to using their computer in a security responsible way. UAC is a small baby step towards protecting yourself against unauthorised system changes, on other OSes it can be FAR more intrusive. "Securty Conscious Computing" is 1000 times more effective than any AV software at preveting your machine from being "pwned".
