I just upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows XP Pro. So far the upgrade is going well except for one aspect. My profile is the only profile on this computer. So I am the administrator. It even says so in the User Accounts in the control panel

The problem I am having is that I am unable to delete folders because Win7 says I need to be an administrator. I don't get it.

I am also having permissions issues. Itunes popped up with a message saying that my Itunes library can't be saved because I don't have the proper permissions. What do I need to do to convince my computer that I am the administrator and that I do in fact have permissions since I do own the computer...lol

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've done that for running programs. The problem I am having is deleting folders from a external hard drive. I downloaded the take ownership reg. fix but that has not enabled me to delete the folder.

It is a folder with audio books in it. I copied the folder to another drive and I just want to delete the folder off of the drive that's not needed any longer.

Make a new user account as admin and use that. If it works move your stuff over and delete the problem account. If it doesn't then post back.

If its an external hard drive, right click and select format. That will kill the files.

That will kill the files and the drive will be freshly formatted. Right-click and set quick format for NTFS if its a big 500GB or so drive, or FAT32 for something smaller than 160GB.

I don't want to lose everything on the drive, just 1 folder. I don't understand why I can delete other folders but not this one.

What's in the folder, and have you checked the security tab?

All that is in the folder is audible audio books and a bin folder. I have tried the security tab. It's very strange I'm able to delete other things off the drive just not this folder.

Just noticed that in the attributes box in Properties the box read only is checked. I try unchecking it and it says I need admin permissions.

Try this. It's a little long winded, but it works:
  1. Right-click on the folder, then select "Properties"
  2. Open the "Security" tab
  3. Click "Edit"
  4. Click "Add"
  5. Click "Advanced"
  6. Click "Find Now"
  7. In the list that appears, select your user name then click "OK"
  8. Click "OK" again
  9. Make sure your user name is selected, then add a check mark to "Full Control" in the permissions list.
  10. Click "OK"
  11. Click "Advanced"
  12. Open the "Owner" tab
  13. Click "Edit"
  14. Select your user name
  15. Add a check mark to the "Replace owner..." box
  16. Click "OK".
  17. Click "OK" when the "You have taken ownership" message appears.
  18. Click "OK"
  19. Click "OK"
That's it. You should now be able to delete the folder in question.

@FrostMourne: What the hell kind of advice do you give if you recommend that someone formats a drive to delete a folder?????

Nope no good. I disconnected the drive and tried to delete it on my laptop that runs vista same problem. I think the folder must be corrupted somehow, not sure. Just wish I could get it off of read only and delete the thing. It's taking up 83 gig on the drive.
