Adobe Flash is a puzzler

I frequently get error postings saying I have no Flash player and need to install it.

Although I have repeatedly told it to go ahead and install it, the installation always fails.

NOW THE KICKER:

A couple days ago, I sat right here and watched my system install a Flash UPGRADE.

WHA.........?

Are there a bunch of different Flashes?

Do any Flash developers need encouragement by ball bat?

Or are the popups occurring using either browser ?
It's not a good idea to download flash from any random site that displays the message,
It's their chance to upload a bunch of tracking cookies or even worse,

You can use these free tools to see if they find anything,
Manually Update them before running full scans,
Try not to use your computer while the scans are running, (one at a time of course).
Uncheck the box to Activate the Free trial from the final install options,

How many browsers are installed?

Hi,

I've always understood that the correct way to update flash player is - not to update it at all but instead fully remove it then reboot (or use a reputable system cleaning product) before installing the latest version(s) for any installed browser(s).

As stated flash blocking add-ons can interfere and if you've made custom changes to your browser's security settings regarding Active X Controls/ Content it can cause problems.

I've also heard that running Google Chrome (has it's own version of flash player built in) alongside other browsers can cause flash player to crash.

Anyway what I tend to do when there's a flash player update available is:

Run the removal tool following all instructions listed here:

Uninstall Flash Player | Windows

That includes shutting down programs that use flash and deleting the files/ folders listed.

Then reboot to flush the system cache and fresh install flash player. The version(s) needed depend upon what browser(s) are installed.

As for Chrome (if you use it) you need to check that the old versions of Chrome have been removed. Updating Chrome didn't used to remove the old versions and I'm not sure if this has been fixed yet.

If you still get problems after the fresh install of flash player - reset your browsers security settings to their defaults.

I have personally never removed an older version before installing the new one. I also agree to never trust any popup saying you need to install/update anything. Instead you can always google "test flash version", "test java version", etc.

One has to be careful, I've had had popups (popup blocker doesn't stop them) that say "Your player is out of date, update NOW!" It kind of resembles the Flash updater, but it's pure BS, and I have no idea what it would download, nothing good I'm sure.
