Solved Adobe reader installs Chrome wheter you want it or not

Hi everyone
If you install the latest adobe reader (XI) it installs Chrome whether you want it to or not -- there's no option to say install or don't install.

Note --I've nothing against the Chrome browser - but if I want to install it I should have the choice.

I'm surprised at adobe doing this -- Software should NOT install other packages not related to the product you are installing without at least giving you a choice.

Fortunately chrome can be uninstalled separately after installing the adobe reader. -- Here again there are other PDF readers such as foxit - but I need the adobe one for work compatibility.

That's why I switched to Foxit Reader. It's nice and lite, very simple and very easy to use.

Just tried it and the only thing it has extra is McAfee and it didn`t install Chrome.

@bassfisher Do you do any striper fishing down there this time of year ?

jimbo45 did you miss the check box here. It does annoy me how it's checked by default it should be unchecked so people don't accidently install stuff they don't want.

I think it depends on the browser to what they offer, the screen above is from IE9 but open the same page in Firefox and you get offered McAfee.

I have XI installed and no Chrome browser. I unchecked the box as shown above.

Stopped using Adobe reader long ago as it became a bloated mess (use Foxit as linked by bassfisher above, very very good and light as I expect from a PDF reader application).

Checkbox or not, these behaviours are annoying. I'm there to download a program, you can tell me how cool is another completely unrelated one, but not force me to keep my eyes wide open to avoid your installers filling my computer of crap.

Like Bassfisher, I've had very good luck with Foxit Reader.

Never happened to me really, updated to version 11 and it honored my decision to leave the crapware out.
The only "crazy" move I did was to not download the default useless web-installer (where you download just a tiny downloader), but find the real, full installer. It does NOT includes any crapware (that I can remember) or at least it leaves them out. The only thing Adobe Reader does without user knowledge or consent is to install a Windows service to auto-update itself, which can be quite easily disabled.

I was too quick on the button !!!

Still 3rd party software that's not part of the original package shouldn't be checked automatically -- at least a CLEAR warning saying This will be installed unless you uncheck the box, or better just leave the default unchecked.

I don't mind a warning saying "Our software works better if you also install ...." but nobody does that any more.

Anyway I've converted to foxit pdf reader -- less bloat etc and doesn't nag every 5 mins about an update -- why on earth should a bog standard pdf reader need updating about 40 times a year !!!!.

Adobe's going the way of Nero -- originally great product but then too many "features" and too much bloat.

Pity there isn't anything remotely comparable to Photoshop yet -- I know The Gimp is making passable strides - but it just isn't up to it when you have to prepare A2 size commercial posters or need complex CYMK type of rendering for pre-press etc. -- otherwise I'd say Bye Bye Adobe.

I can remember my daughter complaining that her netbook was running a lot slower than normal, especially the internet. I'd open IE and 2/3 of the screen would be toolbars. I'd ask her if she actually used any of them and get a no, what are they and why are there so many. Then after I explained how they got there I'd get that . For her it was a I have to have that super duper program all my friends use. Ah there it is, click, click, click, you get the picture. That's what they are counting on and why its enabled by default. They'll snag a few more that are just in a hurry or not paying close enough attention. I can't see them ever changing that tactic unless forced to by legislation.

Jimbo, you need to be careful about what you download and install - read the fine print carefully before proceeding.
