Advanced gaming PC, but has FPS drops on Crysis 2?

So I was playing Crysis 2 on my new PC, yet encountered some serious framerate drops.

Initially, I ran it in all settings maxed out with some FPS drops, then extreme with less, but still had them, then very high and still had drops, finally I set everything to minimal and that reduced it to almost none.

These are my specs:

Processor: AMD FX 8350 4.5 GHz

Graphics card: AMD 7970 HD 3 GB

RAM: 16 GB

PSU: 850 watt

Crysis 2 does not have an AA setting from what I've seen.

Not that I have done any research but I have often wondered why so many SVhosts on my resources as well.

Perhaps your video/audio drivers got corrupted somehow when you installed C2? being that it doesn't take long to install, I would do a clean install of both drivers and test again.

Frame rate fluctuation is normal, still playable is the real issue, give some numbers, should be laughably great on that rig, it is on mine.

svhost uses multiple threads, that is normal, not an issue. 8)

OP processes wise, I think you could dump the 3 T's, SearchIndexer, and not sure what the ViakarakeSrv is, so maybe on that one.

I just picked the game (Crysis 2) up for 5 bucks.

Anyway Crysis is known to be a system tasker so it's no surprise you suffered frame drops when maxing settings.

There could also be a number of reasons for lag so the best thing to do is to experiment with settings and whatnot. You may also have to play with driver settings as well. Patches also play a role.

I've not installed the game yet so I don't have any settings advice at the moment.

Good luck.

Ah, okay.

Yeah, I'll try that. :P

Well, if you get any settings advice, be sure to let me know!

Well, I don't have any program to track my FPS (suggestions?), I've been going from what I've visually seen. On ultra, the system normally runs at I'd SAY 40 FPS (maybe more, I have no idea), but then it really drops to around, I'd guess 15-20, it's moderately playable when it drops, but headshots can be tricky.

Yeah, I figured that was probably normal, because there was always several on my other PCs as well. xD

Alright, thanks!

Not that I have done any research but I have often wondered why so many SVhosts on my resources as well.

Hmm... I don't know, all my other games run just as good as they did prior to installing it.

You could us afterburner or fraps to view fps. With your rig you should easily play with higher settings, here are my settings and it plays smooth for me

Well I just ran the first level on Ultra with no problems, but I'm quite sure that'll change as the intensity level ramps up with more action. One thing I will be doing, and something I do anyway is turn off shadows. Other than being nice to look at, I really don't see a need for them in games.

Anyway you can check my system specs to see what I'm running.

Alright. Thanks for the help!

Turning overdrive on seems to have improved the gameplay.

You shouldn't need to use overdrive for C2 at maximum settings with a 7970.

Yeah, when it was released it was a system pusher, but a 7970 should be able to run Crysis 3 at high settings with only a bit of effort. [Note I didn't say 'maxed out'.]

C2 is pretty old, and a 7970 3gb should be able to handle it easily without Overdrive. I'd be keeping my eye on CPUID to monitor the card. [It's a free DL, google it.] I'd also be planning to upgrade or replace the card if things don't improve.

You shouldn't be having difficulty running a game that old on a 7970 card. It should be running smooth as butter.

I've got three of them in xfire and I turn it off and disable overdrive if I'm running anything as old as C2 so I'm only using 1 card at stock settings. I get 60+ fps easily in C2 with no hickups at all.

If you've got it running, great, but I'd be keeping an eye on things. You seriously shouldn't be having any problem running Crysis 2 on a 7970 that isn't OCed at all. If you're having issues running a game that old on hardware that powerful, something is up.

Couldn't say what, but I'd be suspicious and start monitoring my system and planning ahead just in case I had to replace my card.

Waterfox mostly.
If you look at my system specs I'm running Crysis 2 all maxed out with a 6950 bios modded to a 6970 so if you have a 7970, you should be flying. Now as I progress later in the game, with more and more AI, I'm sure the system will bog down, but so far the only areas it's bogs believe it or not, is in tunnels. Don't understand that one

Anyway I would suggest turning off at least shadows to see if the game performance improves. Shadows is the biggest performance killer in any game and is always the first thing I disable in game settings. Incidentally I have it on right now, but will be turning it off, perhaps this will improve my "tunnel" experience.

Good luck.

yeah, there is a huge difference between a clean install, and a proper install.

AMD systems like to brick an OS if you uninstall every driver supplied by AMD

Even with my sig rig, C2 bogs down occasionally with all bells and whistles.

Doesn't c2 use Fxaa/msaa?

Drop a few of the settings and/or overclocking your card. It will help net you a few fps on the bottom end.

I only get bog downs in tunnels.

BTW does anybody know why this darn game can't seem to remember "Full Screen" settings. Every now and then when I exit and restart the game, it goes to "Windowed Mode". Quite annoying to have to keep changing the setting.

That has NEVER happened to me in any game... guess am Especial? :D :p

Not to get too off-topic but am I the only one who feels the Campaign was edited somehow throughout the whole game? One part in particular I remember is getting out of the building where the chair is, the spores are abound, some heavies get dropped, all of a sudden screen goes black and you appear somewhere  or the part where you kill the Pinger and you have to get on the trucks with the Marines, you drive for about a block and boom, black screen... somewhere else now!
