I have ordered what I think is a non TRIM supported SSD, 64G KingSpec CF IDE 50 pin that will fit into my Fujitsu P7230 which has Vista and I will upgrade to Win 7. I have a choice of 32bit or 64 bit as well. What do I need to do to keep peak performance for the SSD? Or should I send it back unopened and get one with TRIM? Comments appreciated, thanks

From what I understand trim is dependent on Microsoft's AHCI Driver and AHCI being enabled in the bios. Intel also has drivers that support trim. I was unable to find much info on the drive in question, but drives that do not support trim will normally have "Garbage collection". This function is similar to trim but in most cases it has to be run manually. If you do decide to use the drive there is a program called SSD life, a trial of the pro version can be downloaded here. It will tell you if trim is enabled and running.

A good method of restoring a SSD to factory performance is to periodically backup, secure erase and re image the drive. This is true if the drive supports trim or not. If you would like more info on this I could put together a tutorial on the process.

Thankyou Nitroman!
How would one normally manually activate garbage collection? Would that function be contained in a commercial program?

No problem, for example on my ssd you can force garbage collection to run by performing a cold start not just a reboot and allowing it to sit idle at the log on screen for an hour. How to do it on other drives may vary but it should be built into the controller and not require third party software.
