Is there a way to edit the default theme so it looks like with the Properties - Compatibility - Disable visual themes? Setting the option is a good solution but disabling visual themes for many applications causes problems with them, e.g. with foobar2000. Which gets violated too.

I suspect the answer is no as the theme that looks like that is that (if you see what I mean!) W7 automatically shuts down incompatible visual effects in most cases of incompatibility so this shouldn't happen. Do you have the latest releases of the affected applications? Foobar was updated at the end of April and Inkscape has a new (admittedly alpha) version since 1st of June.

What I'm looking for is:
- flat
- grey

It doesn't have to be achieved through changing themes, if you follow me.

Yes, I use the latest software releases. Inkscape does not suffer from any incompatibility when the visual themes are disabled for it in the compatibility tab. It just served as a good example of how the bulky violet default theme can f-k up the whole interface. Foobar is the one with the problem plus it's A LOT of exe files to disable themes for on a fresh system.

OK. Fraid it's past my bedtime so I'll have to have another look at this in the morning. If I've time I'll download the two apps and see if I get the same problem.

There is nothing to test. I can't stress enough that this is not an application specific issue! The violet bumpy theme is applied to 90% of contemporary applications - those that were not designed to be 'aero ready' like Opera browser.

I don't need that.
1st priority: grey instead of violet
2nd priority: flat

If I get only one, that's fine. I would also like to know who's the sick bustard that made violet the default color :D

You would negate the very benefit of having the violet theme modified - affecting all the apps at once. To get a grey and flat themmed apps one by one is already possible (exe properties - compatibility - disable visual themes).

Just for comparison - here's how "unskinned" programs look on Windows XP

My question is: why?

Aero is simply attempting to make the applications not so butt-ugly without completely redoing the application, and I've found Inkscape to work fine as it is.

In fact if it was beige as it is in XP, EVERY time I launch Inkscape I'd have a nasty shock since it's so completely different than the rest of the OS.
