Aero relies on your graphics drivers, which makes it more stable then previous ways of rendering to the screen, assuming your drivers are stable. I'd leave it enabled, but the steps above can be used to switch to a non-aero theme, or change the aero aspect.

You could also use this program to really tweak your system,as well as turn all or just some features of Aero off.
Worth having even if you turn Aero off using your settings.

I wouldn't recommend tweaking software and that app is nothing special, just provides alternate versions of registry edits you can do yourself.
