The company enterprise wide is replacing the XP Pro computers with Windows Professional x64. In the graphic arts department I have a complaint. The computer is an HP xw 8200 workstation. I ran the HP diagnostic disk. All categories passed. I then checked with Microsoft the hardware compatibility list. No issues. I then installed on a new hard drive Windows 7 Professional x64. I ran the updates and patches. The then installed Adobe Premium CS4. I then installed Office 2007. This is the users working environment. I then removed bloat software. Disabled indexing. Turned of the gadgets. And on power settings choose High Performance.
The worker is complaining of hang-ups, non responsiveness, and so forth. I will insert his letter into this thread. Considering this is a fresh install are there other options to create a healthy stable Windows 7 environment? I think it premature to buy a new computer – until we have fully inspected this situation. Here’s is Ankor’s response:
"The new updates seem to have made the system run very slow. Emails take a while to open, and be marked as read, accessing other mapped drives takes minutes, and everything from saving large files in PhotoShop to jumping between application in an attempt to multi-task begets "NO RESPONSE" errors and freezing. Even simple protocols in Excel were slowed.
During busy days in the office, even the smallest of computer difficulties makes things even more stressful. Granted, I expect a hiccup here and there as is the cost of dealing with machines that can sometimes choose to have minds of their own. But on an average day like today, these computer difficulties have made it impossible to complete my work in an efficient manner. Inefficiency begets frustration, which begets impatience which begets error, which in turn transforms a productive environment into anything but that.
I'm not sure if my experience today (which is not unique to my work station) is just a matter of continuing to iron out the kinks of the upgrades. I can think of a few ways which would vastly improve the productivity and workflow situation on the Marketing side of the company, but those are not my decisions to make. I would balk at reverting to the previous XP OS."
