Edit: Upon further thought, I can just see M$ revising Winamp to look and operate like Win 8.

xion is a good substitute for someone who does use playlists and in particular will play a list with several hundred tunes on it.

Several hundred?

I have multiple playlists.
My main one has >8700 tracks in it.
My next largest playlist has >1000 tracks in it.

IMO, WMP 10 was the last good version.

WMP 12 destroyed the meta data on ~900 of my mp3s (when I tried during the W7 Betas).

I always prefered Media Player Classic to this one, but it has been in its time THE player. I for sure won't be sad for this.

Anyway, there is no need for crying. The only thing that goes away is support and future versions, everything else will work EXACTLY in the same way as it always has, provided you've downloaded it beforehand. Just download before it shuts down, install, and enjoy "forever". Just remember to backup that installer.

I really doubt it. Most times MS buy a competing product they have the sole intention to destroy and let it die, or to modify it in such a way that will ruin it just to adapt to their "standard". The best for Winamp is to just disappear before being bough by MS.

For anyone interested here's a link to the GRACENOTE API so I think people like Media Monkey etc should - especially for a 50 USD product - allow people to CHOOSE the database used for track retrieval - or provide all of them.

Looking at 'OZ slaughtering the Brits in the "Gabbatoir" at the 1st Test I thought if it were time-bombed it probably would be set to stop working the next time the Brits win the ashes in 'OZ - or in another word's the worlds FIRST Y3K project (Year 3,000 is NOT a Leap year !!).

exactly pat, thats why i made sure i have my plug in s and skins and the latest version , so in future installs im covered.

its a shame they are doing away with it but i doubt it will make a huge difference to those continuing to use it.
i have it set up really simply.
i dont let it view my libraries i browse my music folder then choose an album select all and play thats it i use cpro skins and have a small thin player that sits above the taskbar , its ideal for when im browsing too as the thin player sits neatly on the add on bar in firefox

I too plan on continuing to use it for as long as it will install in my OS. I've always used the Lite version and that is just too small, clean, and simple to give up at this point.

Unfortunately, I believe MS would buy Winamp for either patent shenanigans or code mining. I doubt we would see a resurrection.

Well here's another user who won't give up on this until I absolutely HAVE TO -- by then music will probably be streamed DIRECTLY into your brains without the need of a computer anyway !!.

Give some young kids a ball point pen and they haven't a clue what to do with it anyway apart from probably looking at it as some sort of strange weapon and thinking about how to stab their neighbours with it -- so the future might be closer than you think.

I agree that English speakers need to stabilize the language instead of allowing to degrade.

The part about Gracenote is intriguing but I have no clue how to implement it. A tutorial on how to do so would be nice. Btw, MediaMonkey comes in both a free and a paid version (the paid version has a lifetime license).

VLC works of course but the GUI isn't really nice for some Audio stuff. The other thing is VLC doesn't have decent Ripping facilities or good music track retrieval (GRACENOTE) info facilities although I'm sure at some stage somebody will probably build those in to it.

I think a lot of people keep VLC for VIDEO while using a dedicated AUDIO player for audio applications.

Am still using Quintessential Player & that went the dodo back in 2004, So Winamp got a few more years of use i think.
