after an MS update no one can log into computer, not even Safe Mode. it's not the keyboard, nor the passwords. i really don't want to reload the OS. any attempt to login says "invalid user or password". it does not even lock out an account after 6 tries, as it was set to. occasionally i will get the message "Welcome" and the spinner, but eventually it just comes back with the same error message about bad user/password. Why is it lying????

Very unlikely that an MS update can cause this. Sometimes Windows just say that the password is invalid (when it's valid), even if you enter it multiple times, but it will probably let you in the account if you wait 10 or more minutes and then type the valid password. I just don't know what exactly causes this bug.
 
I've seen this (log on error) more than once. It's because the user data where the password is saved has been corrupted or deleted.
Do a check disk.
Boot from the installation disk, go to repair, open a CMD window and type
chkdsk c: /f
Pay attention to the results.

Why is it lying? Wrong question! Right question would be, "How do I get back into my PC?".

I can think of two possibilities.
Boot up your PC with a CD containing a Password Removal tool.
Or...
Boot up your PC with your Backup recovery CD and then restore your last backup of "C:".

Beyond that, you probably don't have many options, except to take your PC to a qualified PC tech and have him/her fix it for you.

I AM a tech, and I've fixed similar problems many times, usually for free, if the PC is brought to me.
