I absolutely killed Windows 7 today. I don't know what I did, but nobody else uses the computer so.....:o

I installed Windows 7 (dvd) and everything went smoothly.

But there are no device drivers installed and I don't know where to get them or how to install them. I mean I am totally blank here. I need all the help anyone is willing to put forth.

Dell Inspiron 17 5721, System Type - x64, Intel core i7 @ 1.9 Ghz, MS Windows 7 Home Premium,
1 TB hard disk; 8 GB memory.

I am connected at this time using Ubuntu.

Thank you

In most cases when I do a fresh install just make sure you have your LAN driver installed, mostly included in your motherboard.
After this as above poster said get windows updates.

It should install all your other devices.

You have to go to Dell.com to get 99% of the drivers, you`ll have to get the LAN (network drivers) 1st. Download them to a flashdrive, then you`ll have to install them on the pc you just installed windows on. You can then download the rest from Dell.com. There aren`t many drivers you can get for a Dell computer using windows update, you have to get them directly from Dell.

Did the pc come with a Dell drivers cd ?

You should be following the steps in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which assure a perfect reinstall.

As stated you only need the network driver from the Dell Support Downloads webpage for your tag number in the backup so that if it doesn't start up connected you can install it, get online to run all Important and Optional Windows Updates, with reboots, until no more are offered when you go back to Check for Updates.

This should supply all of your drivers except a very few which you can then import from the Dell webpage.

Be sure to read the Special Note for Dell Owners at the end of tutorial so you can keep the bootable hardware diagnostics partition if it will still run. If not you should have deleted all partitions during the install to create and format new one(s).

If you've varied much from the steps in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 then I'd start over.

Stick with the other methods and tools in the tutorial to keep a perfect install for as long as you do.

I am most grateful for the responses. Thank you all very much. :D

I would like to mention that I did follow the tut here, and things went along smoothly, until the near last step said,"Load the drivers". That's where I hung up.

I will get busy, later today, following all of the excellent advice here.

And And so the saga ends...:D

The big hangup was connecting with the Internet. I solved that by going through Ubuntu and getting the correct download from Dell. After I had resolved that little problem, the rest was easy.

Again, thanks to everyone, this thread is solved.
