after system restore, new hard drive shows wrong size

Problem solved. First tried Gparted boot cd and that was a waste. Stupid thing was complaining of errors related to "can't find Server X".

Downloaded MiniTool Partition Wizard (www.partitionwizard.com) ... I had to upgrade to Pro version for Merge capability ($29). Selected the 450Gb of unallocated space and did "create partition" which created new drive F:. After reboot, then launched tool again and did merge, with C: and F: and that worked fine.

So I'm thinking I might have been able to get this done with win7 tools by simply assigning a partition to unallocated space, then merge may have worked from Disk Manager. MiniTool Part Wizard was also unable to Merge when I only had unallocated space.
Congrats ! Nice to hear that your issue is solved now !

BTW, I have recommended Partition wizard much earlier ... in the second post of this thread . It is a wise decision to keep the bootable CD in hand . In some cases it may be proved to be a lifesaver . The same is true for GParted live CD, too .

Good to hear! There is no merge partition in Windows 7 disk manager AFAIK. I am still puzzled why windows 7 doesn't allow you to extend the space but you got it there :D

arc, yes , thanks for the advice. Didn't mean to sound like I had just discovered the tool. Had actually downloaded much earlier when I read your original post. It just didn't come into play for the solution until the very end, so I wanted to summarize everything for a poor soul who might need this info someday.

Thanks again!
