AFTER video is downloaded to hard drive & retrieved, aud ok, vid spurt

When I play a video initially over the internet it's fine. If I then download it to my hard drive for retrieval later the audio is fine but the video stops and starts every two seconds. I can't seem to find anything online that addresses this. Every question seems to be about the initial viewing and buffering, codecs, drivers, etc., but those all seem to be fine after running some checks.

I'm running on Windows 7 and have plenty of ram, etc. I've read about CPU usage but I don't have any other programs running simultaneously so I'm not sure if that might be the problem. It's been happening for a year so I'm just learning to live with it. Any knowledge shared would really be appreciated. Thanks...

There is a high probability that you need updated codecs.
Installation of the Win7codecs will most likely fix your problem.

After installation you are taken to a Setup and usage page which should be followed.

Hi Shark007,

Thanks so much for your quick response. I was cautiously optimistic as I followed your instructions and downloaded the codec pack. I then rebooted just in case and clicked on one of my saved videos. Unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem. It still paused every two seconds.

A couple of questions though; On the license agreement page it stated in bold red lettering that I needed to uninstall any similar code packs. I have no idea how to do that so made an educated guess that those instructions might be for if I had attempted to do this earlier. I simply have the original codecs that came when I purchased Windows7 two years ago.

Onr of the 1st things the Setup and usage page informs you is that ... "After installation, rightclick the Settings Application shortcut, and choose Run as Adminstrator. The Reset function runs and completes the innitial setup. This only happens once, on 1st use, to setup the codecs."

My next suggestion is to use the suggested settings checkbox at the bottom of the settings application.
Test your file again after following these steps.

After reading that 1st section,
it goes on to deal with specific filetypes and issues you may encounter and how to solve them.

Thank you for the clarification. I had read those instructions twice but thought they were intended for someone simply choosing to add the 64bit codecs, and since I was updating the comprehensive pack I thought they didn't apply to me. I'm very new to all of this. Since I had already clicked the download button above I thought that would suffice.

I then downloaded the 32bit and then the 64bit add-on, and after a little searching I found where the Shark007 codecs were listed among my programs. I did as instructed and then clicked on your 'recommended settings' box. I was so excited that it would now work. Well, it didn't. I then removed the codec program entirely thinking I had missed something again and reinstalled them. This time I took you up on your offer to try the tutorial and so manually entered the various settings recommended. It was all to no avail because the problem persists.

The good thing is I now have updated codecs so that certainly won't hurt for the future. Now that that's been narrowed down maybe it's something with the player itself and perhaps I need to upgrade that somehow.

Anyway, thank you very much again for taking the time to help me.

You don't say what the player is, but my preference is to avoid MS software as much as possible. You might wnat to try VLC.

I forgot to mention, after I accessed the codec info. using the administrative tab I expected to see a 'reset' tab since your instructions indicated by resetting it would be the final step. I did see a 'reset all' tab but figured that would erase what I had just entered and simply revert everything to default mode. Was it supposed to run automically to finish the process? That never happened so did I not finish the process again? I did hit 'exit' of course so maybe that automatically set everything?

Thanks for your input. It actually is the Windows Media Player which of course came with Windows7 when I purchased it. I've read good things about the VLC player so I'll give that a consideration. I'm not all that compute saavy but it crossed my mind that maybe the downloader that I used to download videos (ant.downloader) isn't able to communicate effectively with the Microsoft player. I've gone on their website but their generic FAQ section states these kinds of issues aren't associated with their dowloader but rather the outside issues I'm encountering.

Since you have eliminated codecs as the underlying problem,
My next suggestion would be to install this DirectX update from Microsoft
