This has happened on all of the 2D games (AOE 1 thru AOE2x), however, I was able to fix the first game by updating the gpu drivers. However, all other are completely messed up in colours. This is not the classic colour glitch on AOE2 and AOE: ROR, where the water and grass get slightly corrupted, this is like rainbow vomit; it's like the former glitch, but everywhere. Taking a screenshot is hard because the output comes out completely dark.

How can I fix this problem?

Are you running it in compatibility mode for older Windows?

yes, I've tried every compatibility mode setting + some colour fixes and patchers. Nothing worked thus far. I am confined to play the games on an old Dell Laptop from 2010

You could use free virtuabox and run virtual pc with any o/s. AOE is an old game I used to run it on 486

Try changing to a Non Aero theme before starting the game. It should work.

Compatibility settings. These should also work
Windows XP + SP3
Run in 256 colors
Disable Visual themes
Disable Desktop composition
