Hi to all,

How can I set the Hard drive (operation) to AHCI in Windows and BIOS? Working in BIOS is simpler because it has a limited number of menus.

If your BIOS has the mode setting at IDE and Windows was installed in IDE mode then you must do some preparation before making the change. Windows will not start if you just switch the mode to AHCI.

To change the mode in BIOS you need to find the settings for the SATA controller, usually "Storage Configuration" (or similar) > and then the setting for "Configure SATA as" .

To allow Windows to start in (the changed) AHCI mode you need to make a Registry edit as detailed here:

The procedure is:

• Make the Registry Edit
• Restart the computer
• Immediately go into the BIOS settings
• Make the BIOS setting change > Save & Exit

How can I figure out that my Windows (which is 7 x64) is installed in IDE mode? And also, does it can fast my OS, 7 x64 (which is now slower than the previous 7 x86)?

If your BIOS setting is currently on IDE Mode, and you did not ever change that setting, then you can guess that Windows was installed in IDE Mode.

You can also go through the steps in that tutorial I posted to get to the Registry Entry targeted and see what the setting is currently. If it is 3, then Windows was installed in IDE Mode.

While running your disks in AHCI mode will provide the best functionality of your devices, you should not look to that as a solution for a slow system. It would be quite rare if that is all that was a problem.

It would be best for you to start a new thread and ask for help for the actual problem symptoms you are dealing with. This will provide better results then just guessing at what the problem could be.
