All important updates fail!!

Hello guys,

nice to meet this wonderful forum.
My problem is that ALL my important updates fail to install for some unknown reason.
I've not been able to install SP1, IE9 etc.....

Is there anything I can do besides formatting, or is there a way I can repair windows update only?

I tried the system update readiness tool, but no results.

Best regards,

Peter

Hello Peter, and welcome to the Seven Forums!

What error message are you receiving from Windows?

Also, please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder to your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and upload the new file which is created on your Desktop here.

Thanks a lot!

Richard

Well done for trying that. The results for that should be in the CBS folder above, and so I shall have a little peek when I get that folder :)

Thanks Richard!

Unfortunately my windows are not in English, but what it says is that "Due to a system failure, updates could not be installed successfully".

Here is the CBS zip

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

You may want to check this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91738-windows-update-reset.html

An update will most likely fail if another update is in the process of being installed so I find it pays to reconfigure them so that they are not downloaded and installed automatically, but manually instead.

Although it can be a bit of a pain in the butt, try installing updates singly or in small batches.

Hello again!

Thanks a lot for that logfile :)

Don't worry about the computer's language. :) I have dealt with many foreign computers before, with a combination of the fact that to save Microsoft time and money, most of core Windows and its log files are in English on all language packs (only the tip of the iceberg is actually translated) and Google Translate for the rest. If you want to (you don't have to) open up the .zip file you just sent me, and open CheckSUR.log and CBS.log in Notepad. A good 99% is in English!

Anyway, I have found the source of the problem. In fact, the System Update Readiness Tool has done a lot of good on your computer, however, it needs just a little bit of help in fixing the final errors. Let's do that!

I shall be back in about 2 minutes with a specially crafted fix, just for your computer :) Please just hang on until then!

Richard

Hello again, Peter!

Right, the System Update Readiness Tool found a few errors on your computer which it couldn't fix becuase there was no non corrupt version of the file on your computer. This fix just feeds good versions of those files to the System Update Readiness Tool, so that it can fix up all of the corruptions on your computer.

WARNING! This fix was created specifically for this user! If you are not this user, do not follow these instructions!
@JPetroSS: Ignore the above :)

Download the attached .zip file. Inside it, will be two folders, Packages and Manifests.

Create these folders if they do not already exist: C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages\ and C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\winsxs\Manifests

Extract Packs.zip onto your Desktop. Please place the contents of my Desktop\Packages in C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages\ and my Desktop\Manifests in C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\winsxs\Manifests.

DO NOT place the .zip file in that folder, or the folders themselves. Make sure that a lot of files are in each of those Checksur folder.

Re-run the System Update Readiness Tool, and get me another copy of C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log.

Also, please retest Windows Updates (with fingers slightly crossed, no matter how much we both know that that won't help! lol.)

Thanks a lot!

Richard

Hello!

The problem with Microsoft support is that first tier support often do so many absolutely useless things to waste your time, without much clue of what they actually need to do on any particular computer to fix it, although tier 2 are usually slightly better.

I have found a fixable problem on this computer, and until this is fixed, Windows Update will never work. Also, other soft solutions such as resets and what not will not fix this issue because they do not provide the required replacement files. The only exception is a Repair Install or a Clean Install, but we are not at that stage yet.

I usually try to avoid Microsoft Support at this forum, because I can fix a fair few errors myself, and Microsoft Support tend to undermine rather than help me, and if I get stuck, I can always recommend a Repair Install.

Hello again!

Well done! But this is slightly strange! You appear to have a slightly corrupted logfile!

I have never seen one like that before!

Can you please close every instance of Internet Explorer, leave them closed, and run for me another System Update Readiness Tool execution, and post another CheckSUR.log (you may re-open IE once the tool has finished installing)

I know that they take quite a while, but unfortunately, I do need this. This is because you have had a few failures:

CSI Repairing: CreateFile Failed 0x00000020

0x00000020:

I have had many people repair IE components with IE running before, and I didn't ask you to close IE, but oh well! I guess these are core components from the version-in-use IE.

Hello again!

What sometimes happens is that to fix all errors, the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) knows that it has to run twice, and in these cases, it just starts from the beginning again (without telling the user), and does some log merging at the end. With these errors, I reason that it restarted again, generating multiple lines for the summary, but a bug in the code meant that at some point it forgot that it had done that (restarted), and so did some dodgy stuff when it came to writing one summary from two summaries without merging.

My best guess! Anyway, it looks like the unreported second run fixed all of the remaining issues.

The big question: Does Windows Update work!? Give it a try!

Richard

I'm using Avast......

I don't think that it was the AV...but it did no harm temporarily disabling it. Avast is not a known Windows Update killer (Spybot Search and Destroy TeaTimer and Symantec Corporate editions DEFINITELY are!)

Hello again!

One last thing to try.

Please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder to your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and upload the new file which is created on your Desktop here.

I shall just have a little look and see why Windows is still failing the update - it will tell me that :)

Thanks a lot!

Richard

P.S. It is quite common to have errors still - for some reason unknown to me or my seniors in this field, odd errors do occur, but I do know the fixes for most of them.
