allow COPY but deny READ...

i have a big collection of movies and i stay wt my friends.. sometimes they wanna copy some movies from my PC through the home network which is fine by me but sometimes they just click on the videos and watch them directly.. the problem is that this makes my old router to sometimes stop functioning and i have to reset the router.. so my question.. is it possible to set the security of that folder in such a way it allows them to copy but denies watching the videos ?? tnx.

Yes, there is a way to do that! You could put the videos in a zip folder.

That way they can only save the folder, not play the videos over the network.

errr.. thats just unpractical.. 1000+ videos in zips?!? + i have them added to xbmc library.. any other way i can do this.. preferably wt windows security or any app

Are you on a wired or wireless network? If wireless, you can probably set the QoS in your router configuration.

You can also set the content types in their browsers. Not sure about all the others, but here's Firefox.



And then, of course, there's always the old-fashioned method of politely asking your friends not to stream videos.

ALLOW copy but DENY read....does not compute the computer says.
You just have to educate your friends that watching the videos over the network does not work.

tnx for the replies Jonathan_King and logicearth.. so it cannot be done.. ive tried telling them but they dont listen.. for now i just have to stop sharing the movies so they can only take them manually.. tnx again..

Well you can configure their browsers not to play videos, but if they are smart enough, they could easily get around that.
