My new machine came with Win8. Hated it. Downgraded back to 7 successfully. Started doing all the updates. Kept working great. Now, after service pack 1, immediately after logging in, the system hangs slightly. I can do a few things, try to launch programs, whatever. A giveaway to when it's ready to use is that my network status indicator changes from the circle around the signal strength to the normal "connected" symbol. Until then, I can't do much. It's incredibly frustrating, and it can take up to 5 minutes for it to work normally again. No errors, BSOD's, or anything of the like. Any ideas? I'm technologically capable enough to answer any questions you've got. I just don't know Win 7 for shit. Typically an old XP/*Nix user.

I removed SP1 and it works great again. I removed ONLY SP1.

The update installs successfully with no errors of any type. What sort of information are you looking for? Those directions seem to tell me about running some software but not what to post.

EDIT: Never mind. It does. Just tiny at the bottom.

Second EDIT: I'm also not having any installation problems, so I shall see what that procedure puts up.

Yet another note: I have removed SP1 since then, due to it being so damned slow.

I have tried repeatedly to upload it using the built-in uploader. It is not working (HTTP 500 error). I also fell asleep (GMT -6). You can find the ZIP file with the CBS folder in it at http://www.wavemadison.net/CBS.zip ... I have no errors from Windows Update and I ran and installed that first large update package/file.

Hi BotenRedWolf,

SFC detected a corrupt file which is responsible for something called Network Policy Server (NPS), which means sweet FA to me, but from what you described, it sounds like it might have something to do with your problem :)

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

Hi BotenRedWolf,

I have fixed the script so can you repeat those instructions again please? Then run another SFC scan afterwards:

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Tom

That's what I got after running the script again. SFC now does not want to work, citing another application or service is running. I shall reboot and try again and get those results to you then.

Excellent! The repair looks to be successful, but the SFC results will be able to confirm it. TrustedInstaller, the service behind SFC, is quite often "busy" so it may well be doing something else - a reboot should sort it out though.

Will SP1 break it though? I have uninstalled SP1 to get my boot back to normal speed. I'm just afraid if I reinstall SP1 that it will get all slow and shitty again. Should sfc be re-checked after SP1 re-install?

Will SP1 break it though? I have uninstalled SP1 to get my boot back to normal speed. I'm just afraid if I reinstall SP1 that it will get all slow and shitty again. Should sfc be re-checked after SP1 re-install?

The file would still be there, and be corrupt, after SP1 was installed so it might have been the cause of the problem, there's only one way to find out though.

Make a restore point which we can fall back on if things take a turn for the worse, update to SP1, run SFC again and we'll see if there's any problems.

I'll still try out your suggestion, but out of curiosity; if the file was corrupt beforehand, why was it that only after SP1 was installed did it hang?

It's funny you should ask, I was pondering over that one when first I suggested the possibility. Whilst I know about the files, winsxs and how they're all hardlinked together, what I don't know is how iassdo.dll.mui is used so I'm not sure how installing SP1 could have surfaced the problem, but then again it's always possible that this file was corrupted during, or at the very least around the time of, the SP1 installation.

How did you uninstall SP1? Did you uninstall the update or use a restore point? If you uninstalled the update, then the possibilities I suggested don't make sense purely because of the fact that Windows work fine, with this corrupt file on board, after going back to pre-SP1 Windows. If you used a restore point, then there's hope for my increasingly unlikely scenarios!

Whatever happened, it's best to fix the corruption and see where we are then.

I went into installed updates inside of the Windows Update software. I hate restore points just on principle. What's interesting is I've had this issue on both my Acers as well as an Asus. They were all nearly identical in software (Win7Ult bld 7601). I'm in the process of re-installing SP1 to see if it comes back afterwards, and I'll re-run the sfc and see what happens.

http://www.wavemadison.net/CBS.log for the sfc log AFTER the SP1 update. Still hangs a little bit after login. Not as bad as before, but still hangs more than I'd like and more than without SP1.

Note: 15MB, might take a few to load.

Okay. Done and done. Updated log is at same URL: http://www.wavemadison.net/CBS.log ... Also, as I type this a balloon came up saying it was installing new updates. Shall I repeat the entire process, or just SFC, or what should I do? It appears that it is still hanging. Also, explorer crashed after last boot. Upon restart though, it worked freaking GREAT.

Your CBS log is problem free now :) Those files that were marked for deletion have been sorted out and the only file SFC complains about is that peacock texture. Have all of the available updates installed now?

All of them are up, yes, and still works well! Hey, I also heard that the "gadgets" can cause problems with "security" according to Microsoft. If I use that tool to disable them, could that decrease my overall boot times? (I love my network gadget, but can do without it)
