MoInSTL no disrespect intended my wife is much better than me at sorting out most things. When you say start from scratch do you mean format the hard disc and reinstall the operating system or something less drastic? I suspect that doing that and reinstalling al lthe same things will produce the same result if it is some kind or driver issue or hardware.

Yes, personally I would format the drive and start over. Double check your drivers to be sure you are using the correct and most recent ones. Check your BIOS version as well. You may want to create a system restore point prior to installing each driver and reboot in between. Then if you install the wrong driver you can roll back via system restore. I realize that's a long way of doing things, but it should help isolate any software driver issues. You need to install your chipset drivers first. If you have not installed those, that could be a source of your issues. If the RAM is new, turn off the machine, touch the power supply to discharge any static electricity and unplug it. Carefully remove and re-seat each stick of RAM. Not sure if you have run memtest or not. It's been around for several years.

Edit: In your case, I would also set a restore point prior to installing a large app like Office, etc. Then find and download a free back up program like Easeus To Do (Windows 7 has a fairly decent one) and back everything up once while the clean install is new.

Btw, just type in Event Viewer in the run box. Info from Event Viewer.

Are your specs of the PC having issues?

Hi Greg. sorry being dim, but what do you mena by "boot to desktop"? I can boot up normally or in safe mode and it starts off fine i.e. get to the desk top. In regular mode just slowly keels over despite only saying its using 30-40% of RAM. In safe mode seems to be performing better, but now getting these display issues with Outlook. Is your suggestion:

1. Normal boot?
2. reinstall sound driver
3. reinstall printer driver
4. Run sfc /scannow as Administrator

Failing that do a repair install.

Yes, these are steps I would take while googling the repeat errors in Event Viewer>Admin View to see what kind of problems I have and how others have solved them. It may seem mystifying and daunting at first but you'll gradually learn to troubleshoot the repeat errors to solution even it it takes weeks.

You may need to reinstall the problem drivers in Safe Mode if Normal is unstable..

Then try running sfc /scannow as Admin to see if it can fix damaged System Files.

Do you have the Win7 installer to run a Repair install from the desktop in Normal Mode? It will fix issues like this 90% of the time, once you have eliminated it being a bad driver.

All of the suggestions offered here are good and will work your way to a solution. Keep asking the questions and we will help you along. Memtest86 needs to be downloaded and burned to CD, booted to run 5-6 passes to test RAM.

Thanks for al lthe advice everyone. Looks liek I have plenty of things to try out so will report back whne I have got through them all

reseated RAM as suggested and running memtest, but it has been running for 13 hours now as was expecting it to stop when it had completed. Is it possibly still running i.e. should stop when it is finished? Screen says Pass 100% test 64% Test #8. No errors so far.

You have to stop it manually. The test will run indefinitely otherwise.
If you have no errors in 12 passes you are quite done! The memory tests out OK.

Bonjour! Not a good day.

Bonjour is an Apple products program that is notorious for slowing down Windows computers. It is usually installed with iTunes or iPod apps. It is not so much in the running of the program(s) but in the uninstall or update of them that the problems begin.

I recently worked on an XP desktop that was running so painfully slow that it made you cry. Only after deleting everything iTunes and iPod related file and folder, methodically going through the registry and cleaning up every i-what entry, and then running CCleaner was I able to get the thing running near normal again.

While this is but one possible issue, it stands out because it is so commonly seen in threads regarding "my computer is running slow". It would be worth looking into.

If you need it I would not uninstall it - other than to try and do a re-installation of the i-stuff in an attempt to get it all to play nice with Windows.

You might check with The Others in your household to see if they installed new Apple progs, or uninstalled any, to see if you can figure out what the state of those installations is. On the XP computer I mentioned, i-Stuff had been improperly removed and that is when the problems started.

I suggest you do a web search for "Bonjour Service Windows Slow" and see what you can learn. I am not an Apple guy, so my experience with these progs is quite limited. I just shared my story as a possible parallel path for you to check out.

There are other issues in the Error Logs and one of these may trigger a response from someone else. So be patient and see what some other posters come up with before you chase this one idea!

I see some suggestions that are leading the OP astray, so hopefully we can get to the heart of the issue. First, a weak pwer supply wouldn't cause slow downs....you have shutdowns instead. Second, you tested the memory, which is good, but have you run the manufacturer's diag tool on the hard drive? A failing hard drive could result in sluggishness, and would still be present after a fresh install. I see IAstor listed above...that's your drive controller driver. YOu could have an issue with the drive.
