Copying from my BSOD thread (what would I give to have 'only' that issue now). In trying to fix that probem, laptop is now utterly rooted, no boot, no Windows repair. I do not have another machine available to me (and am not a tech, very clearly).
I tried to follow BSOD advice given, removed AVG and installed Microsoft Security Essentials. It found Alureon and instructed me to run Defender Offline to remove - which it did, apparently with success. The issue was after that - the machine cannot boot. I have run Windows Repair, no dice, machine now takes me to HP Recovery - I am just trying to find the best way to restore things whilst minimizing lost data. I have a full recent backup on external drive (god I'm hoping it did so correctly, certainly spent hours copying files), which I am hoping I can reinstall.
Scared to make the wrong choice from the HP Recovery options. Factory reset, restore point, or clean image. Very unsure what to do. Many thanks in advance
